Stalingrad Resources

Post by bcgames »

Okayrun3254 asked to see a list of the resources I'm using for Stalingrad: Nightmare on the Volga. This is a LONG LIST. So let's get started.

Let's start where I start when I start a new game--The Maps:

Series N501, U.S. Army Map Service, 1954

This link will take you to a list of maps of Eastern Europe at 1:250,000 scale. I download the ones I need, tack them together using an image editing program, then import them into the Stalingrad editor to make the game map. I look at Google Earth to get an idea of the color of the terrain. I read the histories to find the geographical points of interest to make sure they are named in the game--then I build the map.

This map resource is free.

More valuable map data can be found here:

Tactical Pilotage Chart Series - World

These maps are more modern than the U.S. Army Map Service so keep that in mind when extracting data from them.

I have never seen maps with such a level of detail. These are very impressive. Thanks so much for the list.

Though these maps are dated 1954, I think a lot of the data they contain was based on captured German Army maps which were based on captured Soviet maps from WWII. Not sure how information on the effects of damming the Don River found its way on to these maps...U-2 flights didn't start until 1956(?). Dunno...but you have to start somewhere.

After building the map, I start digging into organizations and orders of battle. The George Nafziger Collection is a good place to start:

In the case of Stalingrad, David Glantz' Trilogy on the battle plus his map books are a MUST HAVE:

To the Gates of Stalingrad: Soviet-German Combat Operations, April-August 1942 (Modern War Studies Vol. 1)
Armageddon in Stalingrad: September-November 1942 (Modern War Studies Vol. 2)
Endgame at Stalingrad: Book One: November 1942 (Modern War Studies Vol. 3)
Endgame at Stalingrad: Book Two: December 1942-February 1943 (Modern War Studies Vol. 3)
Companion to Endgame at Stalingrad (Modern War Studies)

All these are available on Amazon.com and Abebooks.com

As far as the map books go, you need to order them directly from David Glantz:

Yep...What's in YOUR wallet?
