So in my game I have managed to elite infantry troops with ~540 atk and 430 defence. Its also not the max since if use them they get even better.

is there a table of troop stats i can look at?

The maximum is 900/900 or in other words 90k attack and defense per clone. You can reach that point before the 10th year by using the same troops over and over to attack independents and pirate facilities. Make SURE the maximum strength troops you create that way are a military maintenance reduction race, with Naxillian being best. Alternatively you can defer conquest until you have colonized the Fortress of Torak ruin world and built a troop academy there, which gives MUCH stronger troops. Once again colonize with a maintenance reduction race, with Naxillian being best. I generally wait until I have the second colonization module so the population starts at 60k rather than 30, halving the time needed to build the troop academy. Be sure to research the troop techs, ending at strategic supremacy, which I generally get by opening one of the research zone bases (reloading repeatedly to get the tech I want)...

It also helps a great deal to have a troop general that you use with your maximum strength troops who has a bonus skill of troop experience gain of course...
