I'm going back to playing the NATO side for this battle.

This is a scenario that comes from Origins 2017, I believe.

There are PDFs with the mission info and some other useful bits for each of those scenarios that should be in the folder.

Plus the VPs do not matter in the Staff exercises and we have them off during the battle. The staff is looking to perform the objective of the mission brief. At least to start with.

I have taken a look at the Soviet options.

The final option - a more defensive one.

Do the T-80s have gun-launched ATGM? That would significantly change their use. If they have, i'd hid them in the forested slopes to snipe NATO units from across the bridge. From the big hill SE of Lauterbach, they could have a good LOS on the town's approaches.

If I were the Soviet commander, i'd put some units at Hertstein and try a surprise offensive across the bridges toward Lautertal AFTER I engaged the main NATO forces in the map center. I'd try to chase down NATO's SPAs and HQ for sure.

Yes, some of the T-80 are ATGM capable. [X(] The OOB uses the Soviet Operational Maneuver Group (OMG) template.

A different look at the AO.

To secure a crossing site (or multiple sites) across the Schlitz, I have to get there.

Even a small Soviet presence in LAUTERBACH could really slow my advance, and I only have 6 hours.

I have six different approaches – some combining as we approach the Schlitz River – to get to the Objectives in the East.

The far North and South approaches are good short term options. However, unless the B254 is secured quickly, they will be difficult for resupplying and forward movement (no good roads).

I see five possible objectives. The first two (Dog and Cat) secure the crossings over the Lauter River. The next two the crossings over the Schlitz and the final one secures the bridgehead.

Speed is important – need to capture Dog quickly and be ready to move towards Tiger/Lion.
