German Ground Radar

Post by New York Jets »

Other than the range, is there any diffenerce between the Freya and Mammut radar sites?

If I take out the Mammut sites, does it make the Freya sites less effective?

Minimum altitude mainly. Freya is around 500 feet. Mammut is... well, considerably more.

crud meant to look for this one, as Harley says, min alt is the main thing you will see, beside max range (much easier to fly under the long range stuff)

hitting the long range ones, makes it easier to isolate a area, but, it takes a lot of work, to get them all, and to keep them down, also, jamming is a little different for each

a shame, we can't really get the radar side to work in a game like it did in the war, it was really interesting, and as they say, it was a war of back and forth, and little edges gained and lost by both sides

some of the best Allied Radar, was always kept over England and not allowed to cross the coast, the Germans had Windows before the Allies did, some of the counter actions were just unreal, one of the best Allied jammer, let the Germans figure out what was going on, since it was so good, and at times, they were able to track, the radar the Allies were using to follow there own raids, they couldn't pick them up, but they could pick up the radar, the Allied ground stations were using, and figure out where the radar was tracking, while they couldn't pick up a target, they knew that the Allies were tracking something

some of the German radar that was captured and then tested, scared the crap out of the testers, and info was never passed on to the units

there are some other radar types in the game, but they are not really in the lines of search radar, so no need to get into them

Hey Chris <S> [8D]

There are several different types of Radar modeled in this game. There are two basic groups, Ground Based and Air Based and each of those have their subcategories. The two types you will see the most are the Freya and the Mammut but there is also Elephant I believe it is as I recall from one of the screens in game.

The Freya is the general type mostly referred to as "Early Warning" and is used as just general detection and plotting of AC across the continent. The other one, Mammut is not too dissimilar but was used by the Luftwaffe to assist with Night Fighter interception of Allied BC streams and Intruders. Knowing something about GG and the games he has built and having played many of them over the years I think I can safely say that although we may debate the accuracy of how he modeled many things he none the less included most of it in some functioning way in his games.

A Google search for RCM or ECM Radar will yield many sites loaded with all kinds of info on all the different types of Radar of all sides and good explanations of what they are, how they work and how they were developed. My previous statment being said to assist my BC efforts I try to neutralize the Mammut around areas I am working with BC. As for the Freya, I tend to try to just deal with those few sites that can provide real Early Warning as to my various raids. I consider it a very daunting task to attempt to shut down the German Radar Network as a whole or even over some region as it repairs very quickley. I think you will find that your limited assets are best used to effect more strategic targets early on in a 43 campaign.

I will defer to Sarge and Harley as to any exacting quantified effects of various Radar as they know their way around under the hood of the game. I just play it. However I know that GG built it so I am pretty sure something is there.

As to your question about the two types being linked in their performance. I would say that IMHO... no they do not seem to be linked. I have not observed that destroying a Freya site for example effects the performance of a Mammut site. But then I didnt build it so I could be mistaken.

Hope this helps answer your questions.

KayBay
