Defeating squares with cavalry and artillery

Forum dedicated to the Scourge of War Game set during the Napoleonic Wars. Scourge of War: Waterloo follows in the footsteps of its American Civil War predecessors and takes the action to one of the most famous battles in history. It is by far the most detailed game about the final battle of the War of the Seventh Coalition.

Defeating squares with cavalry and artillery

Post by pcelt »

It seemed a sound tactic to pin down the square with threatening cavalry while hammering the infantry with artillery before finally charging with cavalry squadrons. But despite prolonged shelling from short distance my follow up cavalry charges were for a long time successfully resisted with high loss to the cavalry by what looked like very thin infantry defences ---------any good tactical advice gratefully received....................thanks

I haven't seen that tactical situation in the game, but, from my own study of Nappy tactics, you completely reduce the squares with artillery fire, then, when the squares finally break and begin to run away, then charge with you cavalry.

Squares are vulnerable mainly in two situations a parte the normal retreat check: they have ad hoc morale check and a minimal number of men limit, under which the square cannot be maintained anymore, so or their return in line or they run in retreat or they try to run inside a possible fort building sufficiently near
