Defense Bonus

Hi!
Do I understand correctly: If I have a trench level 1, I can entrench on a clear field to level 2. That means, if I am attacked, my unit has a 20% chance to negate strength-losses (but suffers morale-damage instead). BUT: If the attacker comes from a side, where my trenches are, I also get a defense bonus. In the manual I did not find anything, how this defense bonus works?

That is right. The defensive bonus earned by entrenched units is +2. The bonus only applies if the defender is attacked across the hex side that is entrenched, or by artillery fire. You can't see the bonus as the defending unit. But if you check your combat odds attacking across a trench hex side against an enemy unit, in the formula underneath the estimated odds you will see the notation "DB+2". That means the defending unit has a defensive bonus of +2 for this possible combat.
If you attack an enemy that is entrenched but across a non-trench hex side, then the defender will still get the loss suppression benefits of entrenchment, but not the defensive bonus for that attack.
Thus if you are in a situation where you can attack an enemy unit from four sides, consider making your first attack across the hex-side that does not have a trench. You will get better results from that first attack because the enemy does not benefit from the defensive bonus.
On the other hand, if you have artillery which can reduce the enemy's entrenchment level before you attack, you might prefer to make your last attack across the hexside without a trench when the defender is at their weakest, so that you have the maximum chance to destroy the unit.

Thanks for answering, you made my day. If I want to know more, I will ask by starting my own thread.
