What is with the Detach garbage.
I have it set to Auto.
HQ sitting right in the City.
RAF getting cracked.

HQs have 3 options: Auto, Auto-Assist & Manual.
Auto seems completely random in terms of what units are attached. I don't understand the criteria but they can be garrisons, engineers, damaged units etc away from the front line.
Manual is too time consuming - have to attach / detach every unit individually.
I always choose Auto-Assist. Allows you to see which units are attached. You can then detach those you don't want and attach those you do want. Doesn't take too long and well worth it.

I always use auto-assist and correct crazy things AI does.

Okay, so I'm not the only one.
Been like this, for my entire existance.
Guessing 95% of players go full-auto.
The other 5% know what's going on, thus win Air Battles.

I always use auto-assist and manual for fine tuning...

Wishing/hoping that the new patch will prioritize attaching air units over all else, since they REQUIRE specific HQs for their supply. Ridiculous that the algorithm will ignore an air unit right next to the HQ in favor of attaching a rear garrison 5 spaces away...

This would probably make the AI more competitive too since we can likely assume it's being hobbled with the same bad choices.

I always use Auto-Assist and I recheck attachments from time to time. There are times due to bad weather (monsoons), inferior tech or damaged aircraft that I can't afford to repair, that I prefer to attach ground units instead of aircraft, like in the Soviet Union.

There should be one slight improvement for the next patch, but otherwise it can be tricky especially when HQs are moving, and other HQs are also in the area looking for attachments.
e.g. should it prioritize previous attachments that possibly make less sense from the new HQ position, or just consider the new HQ position and relative units first and so on.
I can take a look, but from past experiences, it is hard to make it ideal for everyone, as there can be different ideas/suggestions on what is ideal for every individual/situation and so on.

I don't see a problem at all. A player just needs to hone their Hq attachment rigor and administrative skills....

One Auto issue that I have noticed is that the AI frequently has unattached units when HQ attachments are available when multiple HQ's are present. A prime example is the German War in Europe 1942 Campaign. A number of German units on the Russian Front aren't HQ attached when they could be.

I always use the "auto-assist" option, seems to be the best of both worlds. I frequently change my HQ attachments.

Agree. I learned early on from another player to set all my HQ's to auto-assist and check to see who is attached before launching attacks from units in that area. Annoying when it changes attachments to a garrison, or a unit behind the lines not currently committed, but it only takes a second to reassign. As for the comment earlier that air units should be prioritized, I disagree, as the situation dictates what you want attached. An air unit requiring rebuilding, or that your going to relocate, doesn't need to be attached that turn.

Sure, though unattached air units need to be careful about supply, as if not attached to an HQ
before the start of the turn, they will not benefit from any supply benefits HQs provide
for the whole turn (even if later attached to an HQ during that turn), which can leave them dangerously low on supply. .
