undocumented tile effects?

Maybe I hallucinated this but do tanks have less attack vs units in cities and defend less well in cities?
I tried looking in the manual for confirmation on the impact of certain terrain on unit types but I can't find anything.

Probably the best place to look on the map. Right-clicking to see a city's properties, specifically it's defense bonus against certain types of attack.

ok that's one half of what I remember... but are tanks worst to defend in city?

Not just tanks. Heavy Tanks, light Armor and mechanized all suffer a similar effect defending in urban terrain.

One thing I experienced and later gathered from a forums post by Bill or Hubert is, that attacking from a swamp / marsh hex halves the attack values.
This is why tanks never get things done around Leningrad.
Combined with the (documented) -1 defence against air and artillery attacks that makes swamps hexes in general a bad place to be.

Armoured Trains don't suffer the malus, though, just:
Mechanized
Light Tanks
Tanks
Heavy Tanks

Do all land units get the halved attack value when attacking from a swamp hex, or just tanks/mechanised?

All land units. Apparently, there is a section in the game code in which a terrain type with a defensive malus (which applies to swamps) means that attacking out of that terrain is also penalized. The penalty is that the defender's losses are halved. So, unless the enemy is truly weak attacking out of a swamp is probably best left to the pros like mosquitoes and crocodiles.
