TRP Weather mod add-on (Not maintained)

Post by Laki »

Update: As Lothos redid the weather maps in TRP 1.4 I consider this add-on obsolete.

Ever since I started playing Strategic Command I have felt that the weather zones were too big and what would end up happening is that either the whole front is suffering from bad weather or none of it is. This mod me trying to create a more nuanced weather system with much smaller weather zones.

  • Making a big change in the weather system will most likely throw the game balance off until everything gets finetuned.
  • Mod adds over 100 new weather zones to the map.
  • Version 0.2 has new zones added for most of the places you are expected to fight. From Siberia to Ethiopia and from Iraq to the North Atlantic
  • This mod is a Work in progress. Use at your own caution
  • I have not modified the weather effect chances. Currently all the weather Zones are copies of vanilla zones.
  • Weather zones are not linked to each other at the moment. I will need to do some tests to really understand what that option does in game before I spend the time linking everything. I hope connecting the zones will make weather a bit less random than it is currently.
  • Current weather zones are strictly sea or land zones. Same way they are in Original TRP and Vanilla campaigns. Will need to do some tests on mixed zones. It would make sense that sea and costal weather is the same.
  • Using this mod might also require some custom balancing to TRP, but that work is still far in the future.

Version 0.2.1
Download link to mod files: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SQwnH8 ... sp=sharing

To install the mod you need to make a copy of

Code: Select all

TRP - Total Realism Project - 1.3.cgn

Code: Select all

TRP - Total Realism Project - 1.3.dat
And folder named

Code: Select all

_TRP Total Realism Project
These can all be found in

Code: Select all

.../My games/Strategic Command WW II - War in Europe/
Open the copied .cgn file in the editor an import the unzipped data from the file you downloaded. You can check the weather map before and after the import to make sure it has updated correctly. Save changes and exit the editor.

After that you need to copy

Code: Select all

weather.txt
from the downloaded file to

Code: Select all

...\My games\Strategic Command WW II - War in Europe\Campaigns\_TRP - Total Realism Project - 1.3 - Copy\Text\EN
Once all this is done you can run the game and start a new game using the copied version of TRP campaign.

Download link for high visibility weather markers
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MrgDN1 ... sp=sharing

To install high visibility weather markers unzip them:

Code: Select all

...\Steam\steamapps\common\Strategic Command WWII War in Europe\Bitmaps

This is very much work in progress. I would love to get some feedback from you.
  • Are the zones too big, too small or just the right size?
  • I feel like the weather is a bit too random atm. How do you feel about it?
  • How bad is the game balance? Would you rather see weather effects buffed or nerfed?
  • There is bound to be some misplaced weather zones. If you find one please reply in this thread with the coordinates and I will fix them for the next release
Changelog:

0.2.1
- Fixed Corsica and Sardinia from freezing during winter
- Tried to make lakes in Scandinavia and northern Russia freeze over during winter months.
- Fixed a lot of misplaced weather hexes
- Found out that the maximum limit of weather zones is 256

Liking what I'm seeing here.
In the future, consider chances of more mud, rain and mud/snow in certain areas of the USSR in October and November.
Good luck with this and keep us posted with your work. 🙂

Very cool, send me a PM (or jump in discord I am on most of the time) and maybe I can add this into the 1.4 coming release.

Did you change the percentages of bad weather?

Also, can you do the same for TRP World. Since it is the same map except the Pacific. I always keep the two in par with changes.

Notes to people who install it

Do it in two parts, first import the weather zones

Then import the Weather itself

If you do it at the same time you will get a bunch of 0s which is a non weather zone

Also any sea weather zone that has any land (even if an island that can't support units) will need a land weather pattern.

If you do not do this you will then get pockets of areas that have clear weather forever.

Making big changes to weather will most likely mess up the balance, especially for the eastern front. I would suggest to keep this as an addon until we get some feedback and I have had some time to refine the mod. Also there are still big chunks of the map I have not added new zones yet.

I have not touched the percentages yet. Next on testing list is to link the weather zones and see if that will make everything a bit less random.

One of the main reasons I started work on this was to try and make naval combat more interesting by changing the seas from having unlimited freedom of movement to a more confined ever changing maze of storms and calm areas. I tried to mod ships so they would loose more AP when entering storm hexes, but have not been able to get that working. Are weather effects hardcoded?

If I achieve my goal of making weather more localized it might be worth looking into making the weather effects more brutal across the board. This would create organic operational pauses on fronts that are suffering from bad weather while allowing players to keep pushing on other parts of the map. If airplanes and ships would have larger penalties it might encourage players to spread them out so they don't all get hit by bad weather at the same time. This could shift the current alpha strike meta to something more interesting.

Once I get War in Europe to a reasonably balanced state I can take a look at expanding to TRP World

I tried to join the discord through this link from TRP main thread, but it keeps telling me that invite is invalid. You might need to crate a new invite.

I'm a bit torn on if I like or dislike the chance based weather system. On one hand it makes every game different, but on the other it can really mess up a game if you get a series of bad rolls.

I hope that by making the weather more localized the chances of a series of bad rolls should go down as you are throwing a lot more dice. In unmodded TRP the part of Russia where you are fighting has about three weather zones. So not having mud on one of them can be a huge advantage or disadvantage.

I have been following your games on Youtube, thank you for great content.
