Issue with country names in different versions of custom campaign

I have encountered a problem with PBEM turns in my custom fantasy-based campaign with all custom country names when changing the local version.

Easier to describe: started a PBEM game using version 1; played turns, all good; changed the version of the campaign thinking that existing games would not be affected; now all fantasy country names are using RW names. If I make a backup of the original localization.txt and then replace all the #COUNTRY_NAME entries with the fantasy names, all is good again. In the custom localization.txt there are many other changes - research, unit names etc - but all of those appear as they should in the PBEM turns.

So, why would only the country names not be saved in the turn when it is created at the start? I also asked myself why no other custom campaigns have had this issue but if they are RW campaigns using the original country names, the situation won't matter.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? Thanks.

By RW do you mean Real World, i.e. their names before you changed them, or something else?

Sorry, I hate acronyms that are unclear, too. Yes, real world. So the saved PBEM game had all the research names etc from the custom localization.txt (Charge, Weapons etc) but would have the standard country names (UK, USA etc), rather than the custom ones.

What I did to fix it was make a mod of the localization.txt file but I am still curious to know why this happened.

If I've understood correctly, did you have let's say something like this:

version 1.cgn

Started playing with that, then created a new version called something like this:

version 2.cgn

With the associated subfolders for version 2?

What could have happened then is if version 1 was removed, then the game would not find the customizations if started under version 1, e.g. it doesn't know to look for stuff under version 2 etc.

What confuses me, though (and it doesn't take much!) is that the research descriptions etc are stored in localization.txt as are the country names but the research names etc were fine but not the country names. Anyway, it's probably not worth spending any time on as the testing I am doing is all on the same version now. Cheers.
