From a discussion in another thread - using Soviet infantry on Tactical Reserve (units from Road to Moscow III)
Situation 1 - A German infantry division assaulting with an artillery brigade on T and Soviet's 2nd line division is on T also;

- on T.png (295.71 KiB) Viewed 1012 times
Germans do not get the hex (and, you'll see both sides have fewer losses);

- German losses - Soviets on T.png (1020.78 KiB) Viewed 1012 times

- Soviet losses - on T.png (993.43 KiB) Viewed 1012 times
Next you will see both Soviet divisions on D

Situation 2 - A German infantry division assaulting with an artillery brigade on T and Soviet's 2nd line division is on D;

- on D.png (268.79 KiB) Viewed 1010 times
Both sides lose more men and the Germans get the hex;

- Geman losses - Soviet on D&D.jpg (540.72 KiB) Viewed 1010 times

- Soviet losses - on D & D.png (870.94 KiB) Viewed 1010 times
I removed as many variables as I could - air support, prior turn dug in, Germans unit had to advance one hex each time.
Comments?

You don't tell us how many rounds each battle took. With a unit in tactical reserve the Germans didn't advance into the hex. Also there's some randomness added in fairly every combat.

Yes - there is randomness - in one you can see the Soviet gained a point of defense although I didn't do anything differently.
Regarding the rounds - I ran them both again - this time Gerry didn't advance into the vacated hex but overall the same.
With Tactical Reserve;

- on T cc.png (696.19 KiB) Viewed 988 times
Both dug in;

- on D cc.png (870.11 KiB) Viewed 988 times

Yes I'd run the cases ten times or so (easy to do with reloading the save) and average the results. Moreover this scenario (a 1-1 frontal attack) isn't super realistic.
