Carrier air groups have vanished

Post by Bella »

So, CV Saratoga took a torpedo, 30 flotation damage, and Sydney and Pearl shipyards were jammed, so I decided to send her to Los Angeles. I off loaded 3 of the four air groups at Noumea to just keep training and kept the Avengers as an ASW group.

But now the 3 Saratoga air groups have vanished from Noumea and, strangely, several Marine squadrons appeared: a fighter and two SBD Dauntless squadrons, and at only 9 aircraft each. No where in the airlifts are the Saratoga planes to be found (except the Avengers still on board.

What happened? Anyway to get them back?

Have you tried clicking on hotkey "N" (list all naval air groups) to see if you can locate them somewhere on the map and sorting by name? If they're Saratoga air groups they'll be designated something like VF-3, VS-3, VB-3, etc.

It is so easy to answer your questions with the pictures provided plus the information about how you unloaded the air groups.

Did you search for the air units using the land and ship air units selections on the UI?

Go back a couple of turns and look if any Marine air units are coming in as reinforcements to Noumea. I can't tell from here because you did not state what version nor scenario that you are playing.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Did the carrier have, in total, 50 plus damage of any/all types, and did it have aircraft aloft on ops at the time it was hit?

What date and version?
In stock scenario #1 no new VM unit are scheduled to arrive in Noumea. This makes me think your playing a small scenario such as Guadalcanal which does.
Where the units fragments? Fragments will fly to they parent automatically if within range. It's possible that the rules are different in a small scenarios anf they flew off map???
Air unit flown off a carrier no longer appear in the naval list. They are considered land based.

I figure it has to be the grand campaign scenario as he mentions sending the Saratoga to Los Angeles and in a post a few days prior mentioned Wildcat aircraft accumulating at bases on the West Coast and Pearl.

I’m playing the Grand Campaign. I bought the game from Matrix several years back (physical copy), and did not get to it until this year, so I guess it’s an older version. I’m on holiday right now in Europe, so can’t check the actual version number for a couple of weeks. I appreciate the help from everyone. Still learning the ropes of the game, for example, how to post a screen shot. I found a post about this, so will try that when I get home. Next game I’ll update to the most recent version.

Things have most deffinitely changed since the first issue. I'd download and install v26b. Don't bother with v27 until the next patch it's heavily bugged.

If you patch the any old save is unlikely to work.

No, a single torpedo, 31 Flotation damage. I then sailed Saratoga to Noumea. Two days later, I transferred the air groups.

The original Saratoga airgroups are USN VF-3, VS-3, VB-3 & VT-3. I suggest you look for them in the land based air groups, and then the ship based air groups, lists. If they are in neither, then check the group re-inforcement list, then asa last resort the destroyed air groups list. That list is acessed by a button on the bottom of the aircraft losses screen.

Good point Ian R - I never thought of accidental disbandment of the groups.

That doesn't explain how the Marine air squadrons got there though. I wonder if he has not patched the game from it's initial release version or has patched to the new 1127Beta and then back to the 1126a or 1126B version. That could play heck with the database.

I keep hoping he will provide the names of these Marine air groups that have doppelgängered into Noumea in place of the Saratoga air groups. Then we could determine if they were regular reinforcements that maybe jumped the queue or something that popped into the game from the Bermuda Three-sided Polygon.

Lol. I will do that, but I’m currently travelling on holiday in the Azores, so won’t be able to post them until I get home in about 8 days.

Its the 10th of October, so I even allowed for the international date line, + a couple of days slip time.

So, did you accidentally disband them?

Lol, that would be just like me. However, VF3, VS3 and VB3 are now alive and well at Pearl. BTW Saratoga has never been to Pearl in my game, came directly from San Francisco to Noumea, and returned the same way. But I’m glad to see they’re back. Hopefully they won’t fall into a portal again.
