Okay, if I understand correctly, the first night was "bombing," the second night was anything that could be transformed into a "mine hunter," and the third night was troop landings. I'll try that, thanks.

Try it all the same night if at all possible so the damage from the bombardment will still bother the defending forces.

Actually, days/nights of bombardment would be better.

But for advice, ask in a separate thread . . .

Technically and simlified a minehunter finds them and sweeper removes them but the game does not have this distinction. IRL they can both do each other job with a hunter better at finding the unknown and sweeper dealing with known field.

If you are asking me, I was just asked to play the beta version to find errors. I did find over 40 by the time that I quit counting, Yaab found others as well.
A big thanks to you and Yaab for finding errors! Is the beta testing over?

Officially, I do not know.

Unofficially, if the beta testing is over then it should be finalized and then released. I do not know what else is being done, maybe there are issues with the later game situation which I never got to during my testing.

I appreciate you making time to do testing RangerJoe. It takes a lot of time and dedication.
Hopefully it drops at some point this year.

It should, but from what I understand it is with Matrix now so who knows? They have other games that they are testing.

Just started playing again after some years away and already started another Scen #100 campaign. Only revisited the forums days ago and I wasn't expecting another update. This is a nice surprise.

With all the changes, will Halsey's and Cathartes' ship and rotating plane art merge correctly with the new database? And any interface mods? It'd be great to simply copy and paste the art folder from v1126 to v1128 without incompatibilities.

Of course the map has changes, so will have to look and see if there are any new mod options for that. Been using Chemkid's Yamato Damashii v1 in v1126.

A hearty thank you to all involved.

POST-INSTALL EDIT:
Installed v1128 to it's own directory, not in the pre-existing WitP folder. However, I kept getting "Unable to find PW" errors and the game wouldn't start. I set the shortcut "Start In" location to the same as that for the old v1126 shortcut, being the pre-existing folder.

Started v1128 (v1.8.1128.4 - March 4 2023 is shown on the main menu) and loaded the default scenario, but the game loaded the map without the new changes in the old location. I'm guessing any other important stuff is being loaded from there as well, and not the new installation. Starting from the .exe itself still results in the no PW found error.

Clearly, I messed something up.

All that you have to do is to copy the .exe from v1128 to v1126 to play the exact same old scenarios with the upgrade. No other changes are needed.

The pw error means that there is a map issue.

I suggest that you have a new folder plus for the v1128 with a new shortcut but you can simply copy and paste the old switches into the new shortcut target line. Then if you want to use any different map, and/or art changes, only make one change at a time and then test it. I do believe that there are some changes to the map data since there were errors in the older maps as well. Some of the new scenarios have added bases to help the AI.

BTW, welcome back!

Got difficulty following this but you said install v28 in it's own directory. How you do this could be the answer. It sounds as if some part of you v28 install is pionting some part of v26 the easiest way is, assuming v26 works is to:

Delete the v28 folder completely
Copy v26 to new folder v28
Copy and rename v26 shortcut to v28 and edit to point to the new v28 folder and exe etc. Keep any command line switches. The game will now run in the new folder.
Run the patch for v28 making sure you install it to v28 folder.

This is where it can get tricky as v28 does not use an exended map so if v26 was using an extended map then v28 will not work correctly and you will have to patch the map files with the original or any map mod that is standard. The mods usually tell you how.

If it was me coming back after a long time I'd simply uninstall all WitP AE and reinstall the original with patches upto v26b. Longer process but you will have a clean install.

I'd not bother with v28 yet, still a number of problems.

I would say there are no more problems with v28 than v26. In fact many problems were fixed or the game was improved. If no one is playing and testing the beta things might be missed. This is our last chance to improve the patch and the game. If you think there are any problems please list them here. There have been very few problems posted. I really don't understand all of the encouragement to avoid playing the beta. This is it.

It's all a matter of opinion but sorry, there are more problems with 28 than 26 or at least more unknown bugs.

I'm not denying the rest but the last thing a new player wants or one coming back to the game is a situation with unknown bugs. Stick to something more stable and leave the beta testing to those who have been playing for a long time.

Thanks for the replies.

I think for now I'm just going to finish the current Scen #100 campaign in v26 before messing with v28. The changes to the map in v28 make some parts of my current campaign incompatible with it anyway.

If I'm understanding correctly, v28 is meant to be installed over v26, instead of in its own directory? If that's the case, then installing it right now isn't optimal for me. I'll just do what Chris suggested, and eventually copy v26 and put v28 into it.

Not worried about bugs since v26 has its share and I've lived with them.

Thanks.

You can have them in their own directory. You can also take the .exe from the v28 and put it into the v26 directory. If you do that, I suggest that you save the v26 somewhere as a backup, even just adding .bak at the end of it.

As far as the map for v28 is concerned, some of the changes to the map were errors from before. The new bases in Egypt were removed, it is essentially the old map. Some new bases were added to help the AI but a human player can take advantage of those as well.

Some of the errors in v28 were errors from the editor and not the .exe itself. Such as having a B-29 unit show up in 1942 . . .

One of the beauties of this game is you can have as many versions of the game as you like. All you have to do is keep the original patched to the latest proved version, copy the folder and patch that to anything you like.

The only care you have to take is with the editor. I've been unable to get that it to do anything other than save to were you tell it, there's no default for where it is installed. Just be careful e.g. if you open it in v26 say and go save as you have to select v28 if thats were you want to edit and vica versa.
