What do you play when not playing WitP:AE?

Post by sandman2575 »

At the risk of being branded a heretic for suggesting that those who love WitP may, very occasionally, play other games… [:)]

I’d be interested to hear what other games the grogs around here fire up when not playing WitP.

Now, as a newb, I have been surprised – and a little alarmed – at how unbelievably engrossing WitP is. “Oh, did 6 hours just go by? I thought my Saturday was just getting started…” And since I bought it back in August, I’ve been surprised at how seldom I play almost anything else now.

I find WitP amazing … but I do not find it especially relaxing. Sometimes I need to play something less intellectually draining.

Do you?

As you can tell from my avatar, I’m a Company of Heroes fan. And may I enthusiastically recommend the “Normandy 44: European Theater” mod to anyone who feels like giving CoH a spin.

Once upon a time, I was a devoted fan of Hearts of Iron… until HoI3 came out. I do not want to start a Paradox flame thread. But, having rushed out to buy Hoi3 when it came out and then being incredibly disappointed with the state it was in (and remains in), my love affair with the HoI franchise is now very much over. I’m very glad I found WitP to take its place.

Other games I enjoy? Sins of a Solar Empire is superb – really well done all around. The Total War series was/is good, but also highly flawed IMHO – the problems surrounding Empire Total War have put me off the series. Galactic Civilizations is excellent, but I haven’t had an urge to play in months. The granddaddy of them all, Sid Meier’s Civilization, also outstanding of course, but I don’t feel the need to play any longer, haven’t in a long time.

I’m curious about many of the Matrix, Battlefront, and AGEOD titles, but haven’t really delved into them yet. Any fans out there of “World War I: La Grande Guerre”? “Time of Wrath?” “Strategic Command 2”? Other Gary Grigsby titles – “War Between the States” – “World at War: A World Divided”?

I guess what I’m after is opinions like, “If you appreciate the quality of WitP, you’ll appreciate X” Doesn’t have to be as complex as WitP – in fact I prefer suggestions of games that *aren’t* as complex! But great gameplay, decent AI, great attention to detail – just quality games that other folks around here enjoy.

(With apologies for the book length post…)

Haven't played anything else in a good while. But I'm looking forward to grigsby's "war in the east".

WitP knocks the spots off anything else - so maybe a little freecell or minesweeper to kill a few minutes, but nothing else.

Work, Kids, Sleep, Eat, Family Outings, AE......pretty much that's it. The last other game I played was Battles in Italy, which I played when it was new.....in 2005

besides my day job of building critical public safety systems and living with 5 women I also enjoy Storm Eagle Studios "Jutland". As good as WITP is on a grand strategic level Jutland is at tactical Naval combat. All the details and brutally historically accurate. But most of all fun! Ship to Ship combat with lots of Battleships! doesn't get any better

Silent Hunter IV with some mods.

Seems I always do better at being a sub skipper in that game than the same subs do in WITPAE. :-)

Plus, it is fun to just cruise around.

I enjoy many of the HPS games from different eras.

I still go back to TOAW (the operation art of war) from time to time.

Grisby's Civil war is OK, but I think I like AGEod's Civil War and Revolutionary War (WIA)games better.

I like the HPS-Talonsoft Civil War battles - COrinth, Gettysburg, Wilson's Creek, etc. Not lately as AE is all consuming of serious gaming time.

When I want something less demanding, the Europa Universalis series will provide amusement. The civilization games used to serve that function, but Civ 4 got too complex to fulfill the "simple" time.

War between the States or The Next War. Both are board games. I have a game board set up in my house and leave one or the other set up all the time. No cats or small children. [:)]

Rarely venture to anything else. My schedule is akin to Q-ball's. However, on rare occasion, I'll boot up Company of Heroes for some RTS action. There is something uniquely satisfying about machine gunning an enemy squad in a tactical arena...

City of Heroes was and still is an excellent game. Shame they didn't do a lifetime subscription deal like Lord of the Rings.

Christmas is coming so it is almost snowman time.

1. StrikeFighters2 Series Sims
2. Eagle Day to Bombing The Reich
3. War Plan Pacific - for some light PTO fun.

Regarding the WW1 game you mentioned. I personally think Guns of August is better.
But both games have quirky interface. Maybe that's just how to simulate WW1.
