Operational points (OP points or ops) which are 1000 per phase.

It's an abstract measure of time for each phase of the game. See section 6.2.14 page 107 for a more detailed explanation.

Activities like refueling or rearming will use operational points. Sometimes you may notice that, let's say, a PT Boat that needs a reload of torpedoes from a tender in a port doesn't load the torpedoes. You may think there is really something weird happening but if you check the tender you may find that it has already reached 1000 op points for the turn and therefore can't perform the loading process even if it has the supply on board to do the job. On the next turn it will be able to load the torpedoes.

next question

ordinance; specifically torpedoes

i have tried to convert Brisbane into a forward operating base for submarines. i have homeported perhaps 25 subs there. now none of them are being loaded with torpedoes. how do i get torpedoes to brisbane to load.

speaking of ordinance, what are ammunition ships used for? i loaded an AE with supplies....

You need to build up the port to a larger size. And/or put a sub tender (AS) there. The AE ships are good for loading amunition on other ships, like BB's. Early in the war they can only reload ammo if they have supplies on board and disbanded in a port of any size....GP

Land based maritime strike early in the game.

what planes early on are readily available AND capable of actually hitting enemy ships from land bases?

Every plane with either bombs or torpedoes is certainly capable of hitting ships.

If you put level bombers to 1000 ft, they use LowNaval skill (<6000 ft) and are more vulnerable to flak and also take morale hit making low level attacks. If you put level bombers at 100 ft, they make skip bombing, which is considered "gamey" in many PBEM games.

Dive and torpedo bombers are best vs. ships, but if you bring medium bombers down to 1000ft they become effective. Vs. AI no problem, but need agreement with other player if PBEM/Hotseat game.

While "skip bombing" was invented by B-17 unit, I myself restrict low-level (below 6000ft) of heavy 4-engined bombers to 6000ft before 1943. Medium bombers I won't restrict except no 100ft skip bombing before 1943.

Small correction: Low Nav skill is used from 100 to 1999 feet. 2000 and up uses NavB. The air model received a major revamp around 2014 IIRC, where the dividing line for high/low was set at 2000 feet instead of 6000 feet. In the same update (patch), glide bombing was removed from the game so references to it in the manual are moot.

game almost unplayable.

does anyone else deal with this game "chugging" if i select a task force and want to scroll any distance off the screen it can take minutes (yes minutes) to scroll over to the desired destination. also if there are a lot of units in the area (like submarines at the Philippines in the beginning (or my attempted forward sub base at Brisbane, Queensland) the game is unplayable.

i thought this was a decade old game.

does anyone else have this problem?

PS
design wise the auto retirement has been my bane since day one. i sent that task force there for a reason.

Could be a number of things but first you need to set up the game using command line switches. These are a must simply because it is an old game. The switches I use on my Win 10, 1920x1080 display are -pxf1900 -pyf1000 -cpu4 -SingleCpuOrders -dd_sw -altFont -multiaudio -deepColor -skipVideo -archive -w

How to do it is here https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 4&t=332855

If you have set them and you still have a problem then leaving any map info on thats not standard active will slow scrolling down. E.g. like leaving search arc (z) or supply (5) on all the time.

The most important thing is the switches.

Looks like he meant "Remain on Station" orders were not followed. That happens when any kind of event happens for the loitering TF - even catching a glimpse of an enemy xAK TF can cause the loitering TF to RTB. Such TFs must be checked every turn, and combat 'events' that do not become battles should be monitored too.
Setting a single hex patrol works better - the TF might move to flee a threat but will return to the patrol hex if it is able.

The threat level may also determine what might happen.
