Bringing ships out of the shipyard

Post by Bella »

I’m at January 25, 1942, well after the Pearl Harbour attack. The Battleship Tennessee (at Pearl) is at only 7 system damage and 0 in the rest. It says it has 36 days left, so I thought I’d zip it over to San Fran to speed it up. But the game will not allow me to put it back into service, even with such slight damage.

Workaround? Why is this? Is this what happens with every ship you out into a shipyard?

On a related topic, the Repulse survived and is heavily damaged and in Singapore shipyard. Strangely, the game DOES allow me to withdraw the stand down order, but will not allow me to select it for a TF (Singapore will fall soon and I want to see if I can get ut away to Perth and then Melbourne).

Trying to understand.

normally that would just take 2/3ays to repair anyway - it depends how many ships are being repaired in the shipyard?
also it takes 3 days to for a ship to be ready to form into a TF (greyed out) when taken out of a shipyard

Is the ship being upgraded? If so, the ship has to stay in a shipyard or pier side repair mode.

BTW, at that level of damage it is quicker to keep it in Oahu . . .

When you take a ship out of repair that isn't finished, it takes 3 days to make it ready. The repulse should be greyed out.
And then with the Tennessee just as RJ said, You probably have it upgrading. A normal noob move is to leave upgrades ON at the beginning of the game. But its ok, this game takes a lot of learning....GP

So, if the text for the name of the Repulse is currently in grey instead of yellow it means that ship is in the process of having its systems turned back on, boilers relit, the shipyard electrical and telephone connections detached, keel blocks removed, drydock reflooded and everything onboard inspected and sealed up again. This operation will take 1-3 game days depending on the size of the ship before its name turns yellow again and it's ready for sea and TF assignment once more. The delay is simulating the logistics of moving a large vessel in or out of yard repair or drydock. Often a laborious time-consuming process.

BTW you wouldn't want to move the Repulse in the condition it is in my picture. At a speed of five it'd probably founder before it got too far..

One other possibility with Tennessee is that a major device on board has to be replaced - e.g. a turret is destroyed. That could take the 67 days. Device damage is not assessed until your ship has spent a full day stood down in port or in the shipyard, so always check your damaged ship time estimates on the day after they have gone into repair.

I second Alfred's excellent treatise of Ship Repair.

Especially painful is losing BB turret, since it cannot be repaired everywhere.
