Alexandria does not provide supply ?

Post by Garush »

Hi everyone!

I'm playing PBEM game n°450401 as the allied player vs Custine (He's completely killing me). Besides a very (too) successful invasion of England, he is also about to take Egypt. I lost Port Said but I still hold Alexandria.

But when I started my last turn of the game, my units were considered out of supply, even though Alexandria is a level 9 port. I wanted to check by starting a game against the AI: Alexandria is indeed a source of supply.

But in my critical situation:

Alexandria is no more a supply source :

Did I forget a special rule for Egypt or something?

There are no supply sources in Egypt. You need to get it by sea to ports (and there is an actual limit to how many one can supply, but it is very high). And usually, as long as you have the port, you will get at least basic (very low) supply.

Could it be that he also took Gibraltar and then there is no way for supply to get in (I kind of remember an update that took that possibility into account, likewise for the Baltic)?

Right!

He took Gibraltar AND Port-Said. I understand now. Thanks.

By the way, it's the first time I saw « Spain join the Axis » in a game. Custine and I already played a game with Operation Sealion (invasion of England) but Spain remains Neutral. With Spain as an Axis power, it's impossible to prevent the fall of Gibraltar.

The difference between the two games might be the US. I think once the US is at war, no country (Spain, Turkey) will join the Axis as per the mentioned events in the scenario notes IIRC.

No. Last time, US was not on war, Custine invaded England, and we fight a long time before US forces help me to push german out of England. And Spain remain neutral all the time.

May be a rule changed ?

Could be be. There have been a few changes over the years.

But Germany needs to capture a few UK cities before the US joins. Maybe some one or more was captured after that?

I almost lost England. Custine totally neglected the Eastern Front, Norway, Yugoslavia and Greece to use the full power of Germany and Italy on the UK. So with the addition of Spain joining them and blocking the Mediterranean by taking Gibraltar... We are in mid-1941. The USA will not intervene before December 1941, the Russians May 1942. I will be dead by then...

Totally unexpected event: faced with the critical situation in the UK (we are fighting in Scotland at the gates of Edinburgh), the USA gain the possibility of declaring war on Germany, which I did immediately.

So even after many games, this game still has surprises in store for me.

It does seems like an interesting game.

And, but that is just me, I rather lose an interesting game that win a boring one, and by far :D The immersion is what does it for me. The result is secondary (not unimportant, but not top of list).

Of course, I also very often lost the boring ones too...
