Or at least I think I was first to download since no one else claimed the title. Just wanted to say that the download works fine. Can't beat the price either. Way to go Matrix!
I've had Spartan on my HD for quite awhile and after the install I had the Scenarios from Spartan available to me in Gates of Troy as well. If you already have Spartan the upgrade for only $20 is well worth it (IMHO).

But I wasn't far behind you!
My confirmation e-mail was sent at 12/7/2004 6:36 PM
This does seem like a really great deal for the $19.95 download! Attention Matrix... I will buy about anything at this price, though I agonize over spending $39.95 and higher. Low cost and higher volume sales might really be the trick to achieving higher financial profits!

When you guys are done patting yourselves on the back for ordering, how about some feedback on the game! [;)]

Try the demo of Spartan. Gates of Troy is Spartan with some extra features and scenarios that definitely enhance the game. You can get it here:

I see there is a GoT demo too so I'll take a look at both. Can anyone comment yet on how good the manual is at explaining the mechanics?

I wonder. It's an interesting balance.
I've just bought GoT too (I had no intention of doing so before), it just seems silly not to at that price. The UK retail "box" release a few weeks ago was at UKP20 which equates to about $30-35 US - a "mid-range" price here. It's not a "mid-range" product - I suspect the pricing was because it's just too similar to the full-price "Spartan" released not that long before.
I wonder (again) if Matrix thought they over-priced TS:Alexander a bit, and are trying the low price higher volume option. Judging from the boards several regulars thought that was the case, although hopefully the demo has now convinced them.
BTW... does GoT include all the Spartan scenarios (i.e it's an expanded version of the same thing) or are these only available if you have Spartan ? Not having that game, I have no idea what scenarios it has (although I note the GoT tutorial refers to itself as the Spartan tutorial, so I assume they are to all intents and purposes the same game).

This is from the Slitherine website:
"...if you have Gates of Troy then you only get maps 1-3 & 13-18. You need to get Spartan to get maps 4 to 12..."
Maps basically equate to scenarios.

I really had no intention of buying GOT until I saw the $19.95 price tag on the download version. It looked mildly interesting from the screen shots and description, but it didn't really grab me. I'm more in to modern warfare.
Let me say that the sceen shots do not come close to really capturing the dynamic energy and beautiful screens of this game. I love the battle resolution and the subtle strategies that can be designed. I also hadn't really grasped the depth of the city and economy management tools which are excellent. I'm rethinking my committment to Modernity!
It was an impulse buy, driven by the pricing, and I'm quite happy that I have acquired it! The same may be true of Tin Soliders, but I won't be buying unless it gets down to $19.95 too (which I would highly recommend Matrix consider).
More later when I get past the first real scenario!

Whoa... I'm on the soapbox here!
Forgot to mention... this past weekend I picked up Medieval Total War Battle Collection, as well as American Conquest Gold Edition for.... <gasp>... $19.99 at my local store.
Do we see a developing pattern in my game purchases?
What about the rest of you? Am I alone in the wilderness with this $19.95 game fetish fascination?
Talk it up and maybe we can convince Matrix to try more of this kind of pricing structure. From the comment above, it seems that they are listening. [&o]

You're not alone. I bought GoT based on the price and what I read in the reviews. So I'll answer my own question on the manual after a very casual look at it. It looks very good and when combined with the tutorials which I just started it should be easy to get into the game even though I don't own Spartan. Looks like this one is hard to pass up at $19.95!

At that price, I'll buy something just to support the hobby!
The GoT manuals are very well done. Quite attractive and they provide both a clear printing version and a beautiful electronic version with beautiful graphics.
I'd like to see every Matrix forum member get out there and buy this download! [:)]

Maybe the first to *download* GoT. I had an English edition on CD a long time ago.
