Bought the game today and I'm only 13 races deep into the normal campaign, so take this with a grain of salt.
I analyzed the stats to find the perfect strategy.
My idea: At race start get into 1st place ASAP by flogging the Bejeezus outta my horses, then stay on the most inner lane that will still allow your top speed (in Roman arenas mostly the outer lane) and simply hold position.
What stats work with this approach?
- Driver: +2 skill (for the turns), 0 constitution (you won't take damage when in the lead)
- Chariot: +2 quality (acceleration is key to reach 1st place ASAP), 0 size (see above, no damage)
- Horse: +2 speed (top speed to stay in the lead), 1-2 endurance.

Am I missing something or is it that easy?

Well, that is definitely a winning strategy, if you are able to get first position before the first turn specially. A long broad circus will ease this even more [:)]

Well, turns out it's not that easy after all, thank god!
I finished the normal campaign with about 32% win ratio (mostly lvl.3-5 races). I lost quite a few races because I focused on killing rivals. A rather satisfying strategy I shall confess.
