Demo runs REAL slow, is it me?

Post by Wooglin »

I got the demo off aoed's site. Played the tutorial. Then played the year long scenario. For the first few months, it seemed to play fine. The cursor was a little sluggish but not a game breaker. However, it took longer and longer to jump from one portion of the map to the next. For example, I'd be in the Deep South, click the mini map around Boston, and it would take a couple of minutes to go there while everything else was frozen. This appeared to get worse and worse to the point of being unplayable. I executed the November turn and it took so long to jump to the next action spot - I waited about 10 minutes - that I finally gave up and went to bed (it had executed by morning).

So here's my deal. I know I don't have the most up to date computer. If this performance is because of me, then I'll just wait until I get a new computer. However, if somebody says that is a problem with the demo - a memory leak of some kind - and resolved in the full version (with patches) then I'll buy it today.

Anybody have this experience or know something about it?

Don't think anyone has complained of a memory leak problem. I have not ran the demo game(playing full game) and it runs fine on a laptop.

Not sure what it is but sounds like its your machine-ram memory, graphics card, drivers, dx. Check into those in the cheapest order.[:D]

Hello,

That's an hardware problem I would say, as the demo as no specific problem compared to the full game. Check your driver date, it must be of 2006 (january will do). Also you should have a 64 Mb+ video card and 512 Mb of memory as the minimum config. If you are unsure of your specs, you can send me your DxDiag for a quick report: support@ageod.com

Thanks for the prompt and helpful response. I am not sure my laptop meets these specs. By checking driver date I assume that means video driver.

I came into work and tried it on my more powerful work computer and did not have that problem. However, I had a strange graphics problem where the graphics seemed folded over on itself. I am sending a screenshot to support@ageod.com. Odd stuff. - w

Hi,
The tiled graphics you have are an hardware incompatibility (too old chipset) or a video driver problem, or both. I replied to you by private mail with some requests for additional informations, so that we can identify precisely the cause.

Additional informations: Even if BOA looks '2D' it is in fact using Direct 3D and need a video card with 2006 driver which is able to display 1024 pixels-wide textures (basically  any 3 years or less video card and most 4 years old can do that).

Thanks again for your help.

I tried to run the demo on a third computer, about 4+ years old but with extra (cheep) RAM and a vid card only about 2+ years old and it runs perfectly. Thanks again for your suggestions. I just purchased the game and like it a lot.

p.s. I am real surprised I never heard of this game before now.

perhaps he wanted to know with who the person driving your car is going out... [:D]

Hooker replied, "[Brigadier] General Gibbon's brigade of Western men."
McClellan stated, "They must be made of iron."

One thing I found with sluggish performance is to go into that settings program for the game (not in game options) and change the mouse so it doesn't use the in game graphic but the regular mouse. I forget if it's from hardware to software or the other way around. I have a new computer with lots of memory and it ran so slow especially on the ledger screen. I changed the mouse option and it runs blazingly fast now.

Hardware cursor is far faster yes.

If you are in Vista, be sure to disable 3D desktop for the game also, it is a 'neat' Vista feature which can eat up to 50% of the game speed.
