Follow-up research question

Ok, just trying to understand a little bit of the nitty gritty of this game. When I open up the economic report in my advanced game as union against AI, its showing the number 7 under weaponry next to Mass. I assume this means that Mass. is providing 7 points towards weaponry research. Now, when I go to Mass. in the city detail its showing that I have one armory contributing 3 pnts to weaponry research. I also have 1 university which also contributes one point to weaponry research along with 1 point for the the research? If so then thats 4. I have 2 schools(not in Mass), that would make another 2 perhaps, which makes 6 pnts towards weap. research? The gov. supports weap. research whcih is a+ 5 I believe so 11? Long story short, 4,5,6,11, Im not getting 7 like in my economic report. Where could I be going wrong with my calculations? Is there a factor that Im possibly leaving out. Thanks for as usual for all your help. I figure 10 more years and I might be ready for WITP:) kirk hutzel

what difficulty level do you play? At higher settings you get negative modifiers to your research as well.

But from what you say, I get the following calculation;
+3 for the research facility
+1 for the university
+5 for governor support
=+9 total research
The schools will generate +1 to every field of research in the city they are built.
Universities adds +1 to each research facility in the city they are built.
Richer economy if in effect will add +25% to all income, also research
Possible nationwide negative modifiers
other governors
each research in a field requires 2 research points of the same kind in upkeep
poorer economy will deduct 25% from all income, also research
My guess is that poorer economy is in play?
include poorer economy=+9-25%=+9-2=7

Thanks you for the reply terje and thanks for pointing out that school building give bonuses only to all the res. buildings in the CITY that thay are in. I looked at my game and it looks like poorer and richer econonomy are turned off so that would appear not to be the answer. It doesnt look like any of the other governors oppose weaponary research either. Not to sound too stupid, but could you clarify or give an example of what you mean by , "each research in a field requires 2 research points of the same kind in upkeep"? Are you saying that if I have developed smokeless powder then I would deduct 2 pnts for the upkeep of smokeless powder from my total of 9 in Mass. in weaponry research? How and where do I go to quickly see what weaponry research dev. I already have? Thanks kirk hutzel

each research in a field requires 2 research points of the same kind in upkeep
Let us say you have +7 in weapons research. Then you make a research breakthrough in the weapons department and chose an upgrade (lets say Spencers). Next turn you will only have +5 weapons research. This is because you have the 7 you started with ,but now have to "pay" an upkeep of 2 research points. Then some turns later you make another weapons research breakthrough and chose another upgrade (lets say imp.Springfield). The following turn your weapons research will be +3 because;
you started with 7
-Spencer -2
-imp. Springfield -2
-------------------------------------
=new research rate =3
Hope this clarified it somewhat [:)]
To quickly see your current upgrades, go into any city and just underneath the research numbers and lightbulbs you will see a button that says "view upgrades", just press that button and you will see any upgrades aquired by any side.
