I'm definitely giving it the number printed on the CD and that's the same as the one in my account - I can copy and paste that into the setup program - but I get "You have entered an invalid serial number. Please try again".

I know I've played this one on a previous PC, and it looks like the same basic installer as all the other games (SSG's Battles in Italy / Carriers At War install with no problems) so what's happening?

Ah, the 'looks very like a CD-R' with the serial number printed on it in the box is still readable, and I have an optical disc drive..

.. and it will install from there.

Given the other (unanswered) complaints about this here, I wonder if the physical disc installer is looking for a different hash / whatever of the serial number compared to the downloadable installer.
