Rostov 1941 (Beta)

Post by Ronald Wendt »

Hi folks,

as the title suggests, this is not a finalized version of the map, but as it might proof useful here it is anyway.

It has victory conditions for both sides and as usual a historical OoB, though i notices some Soviet Rifle units lack their names.

Also it is not balanced and might have errors in the script.

Regards,

This Beta scenario does not work for me [:(]. The game returns towards the Windows desktop by wanting to load it.

Hi folks,

so while warning you about the resources bug, i was working with a fixed version of the exe and forgot to adjust the scenario which obviously won't work with 1.08.

I am sorry for this and the new version attached to this post should work with the public version of Germany at War.

@zakblood: you are welcome. Nice to see you, too are still around.

Hi Ronald,

This version works with 1.08

No idea for the time being what to do with it. In AA and Eastern Front 1941 timeline the attack on Rostov happens earlier and the Soviets are massacred in October but real OOBs are what we need.

Maybe I find a Russian OOB for the Soviet counter-attack. There is also a Rostov scenario in the world of Panzer General II mods, that game has a smaller scale and cannot be directly converted to Germany at War but is interesting as an example of what modders can do if they have time and maybe this scenario has some of the missing Soviet numbers.

The Russian maps I have seen so far are ''army level'' telling how many divisions/brigades were in each army but not giving their numbers.

Hi Marechal,

zhanks for the info, glad it works.

I had trouble to find the OoBs for each sequence of this battle, which is really a series of blows thrown by each side depending on the strength at one point of time. The one included in this scenario is from the moment the Germans cross the Mius river in Novmeber.

The AA campaign of course has to have altered timeline, or it would be pointless.

As to the Soviet maps, i think it was hard to say how strong the units were as at that point a lot was going with desertion and a lot of troops still getting captured. I think it was David Glantz who wrote that in late 1941 the word division did not represent the paper strength at all with quite some units being down to 2000-3000 men thus having rather regiment than division size.

Cheers,

Hi Ronald,

In AA as well as 1941 the 1st Panzer Group must advance to Melitopol as fast as it can after Kiev and then after Melitopol they have another week to reach the position from which Rostov is attacked. As soon as the snow falls tanks do not become just slow crawlers, they also become the biggest fuel eaters. So if the player has not taken Rostov before the snow falls it is better to leave it for next year. (Moscow in 1941 campaign is an exception, you must take it because you must take it and tanks are useless against heavy fortifications anyway regardless the season.)

The real Rostov battle seems to have three phases: 1. AGS approaches Rostov; 2. AGS takes Rostov but the Soviets start pushing in the North; 3. (in this scenario) AGS is forced to retreat from Rostov.

Even in game divisions can go down to regiment size, depending on how intense the fight is. And there may not be enough resources to send replacements to all. In Mpzhaisk battle after epic Wjasma my resources were down to 700 at one point.

Good scenario [:)]

Maybe some remarks on the presentation :

- Scenario description : "The III. Panzerkorps of the Germans" -> "The German III. Panzerkorps" and "The 56. Army of the Soviets" -> "The Soviet 56. Army" ?

- Objectives : the ending of the word "suburbs" ?
Image

- Map : No rivers names ? If you add the river names, you could suppress the name "bridge over Donets" ?

Had time to make those changes, new version is attached. Sadly had no time to work on balance/function, thanks for your hints.
