7th Panzer 97 battle long campaign AAR

That is a fantastic job. Taking out two KV-1Es with Panzer 38ts at 50 meters without taking a loss is just outstanding. I'm not sure I or the testers could manage that.

I was mostly very lucky that they decided to attack, specifically: that they decided to attack the Panzer 38(t)E's. If they had decided to stay put in their position in the open or if they had decided to move towards the Panzer IIB's, I would've been in some serious trouble.

The ambush went just as I had planned it. The key was not to give the KV-1's the time to fire, as my tanks would be completely screwed otherwise. In this case, one hit a track of a HQ Panzer 38(t)E but the other didn't have the chance to fire.

The KV-1's could've easily destroyed my tanks, and there was a chance that all of the APCR shells would simply bounce. In this case, about 1/4 went through the armour, which was enough. Seeing my tank crews desperately fire shell after shell before the hits that eventually destroyed the tanks went through was one of those classic wargaming moments.

Even with a solid "ambush them at close range" plan, I needed some luck and I got that. I still prefer to be good rather than lucky, but a bit of luck from time to time doesn't hurt.

We'll fix this map ASAP, sorry for the issues it caused.

Also, I was on vacation last Saturday through Tuesday. Returned on Wednesday to a massive pile of work and spent all week just trying to catch up. Sorry I've been a bit quiet.

Among the things I was working on though was the first update. We have quite a few fixes and improvements lined up. The first public beta version of that update should be released next week and hopefully the official release will follow in a week or two after that, depending on how testing goes.

I'm not sure what the odds are for facing BT-5's and early model T-26's, but maybe the chance of at least facing BT-7's and late model T-26's could be increased a bit after July or so. It feels a bit odd to face the truly obsolete models in October.

Although I haven't faced T-34's in the next 3 battles, by my count I've faced either heavy armour (KV-1, KV-2, Matilda Mk II's) or T-34's in 10 out of 21 battles thus far. To me, that sounds just about right for 1941 considering that the vast majority of the tanks the Soviets were using were 1930's tank variants.

Battle 19. Legendary victory. Like battle 20, this battle mostly took a while because I had to manually target enemy units after my tanks ran out of ammo. Generally, ammunition levels have been around 60% or around 80%, with ammunition levels improving with the onset of winter (this is less weird than it sounds: to the Wehrmacht, mud in Autumn created more logistics difficulties than the early snow). Now that the Soviets are attacking in December starting in battle 21, ammunition levels are down to around 70%, which is also realistic in my opinion.

To get back on track in terms of the timetable, there was only 1 battle in November, battle 20.

Back to battle 19.

Compared to the previous battle, this was a piece of cake. I could see all enemy tanks at the start, and they were all promptly destroyed before they could do much, 4 out of 8 T-26's didn't get the chance to fire a single shot.

The start. The plan was pretty simple: duel with the enemy tanks, then move up to the flags. HQ tanks and non-core Panzer IVD's to the east, the rest to the west.

The odds do decrease quite a lot with each passing month. It's still possible though. By 1942 it should be pretty much impossible, but there is a small chance through the winter from what I recall.

We're hoping to have that MG not auto-targeting when main gun ammo is out issue fixed for the first update.

There were mostly some weird graphics when I zoomed out, which probably indicated how the map looked like in the editor. For example: there would be a rectangular block of a (slightly) different colour than the ground around a road, to indicate a road tile I presume.

OK, good to hear. I haven't found any new bugs or glitches in the last few battles. I had a CTD or two and the interaction between my graphics card and the game sometimes causes the game to freeze, after which the graphics card's dsettings are reset automatically, but those are infrequent problems that just happen from time to time which may or may not be directly related to the game.

Battle 20. Legendary victory.

Aside from the Luftwaffe's preference for hitting infantry, the appearance of the first ZiS-3 (it's spelled "ZIS" for both the ZiS-2 and ZiS-3 in the game, with a capital I instead of a lower case i) and the appearance of the first StuG IIIB's (I'm a big fan of assault guns/tank destroyers), there was nothing special about the battle. It mostly took a long time due to having to select MG targets manually. It took me about 40 minutes to play about 13 minutes of in-game time, and that's at 3x speed.



Red circle: 6 BT-5's

Start. The plan was to flank the enemy positions, after receiving a warning about minefields. Panzer IIB's and StuG IIIB's would wait a while until the anti-tank defenses were removed and would then move to the central part of the map. The Panzer 38(t)E's were tasked with moving towards the edge of the map, before wheeling to the left and moving towards the flags. I finally found a use for the recon units, which cleaned up some infantry, although they had to retreat a few times due to the presence of DShK's, which would tear them to pieces.

It seems I forgot to turn the camera towards the flags prior to taking the screenshot, so my apologies for that. The flags are in the upper left.

At this zoom level, you can see that the ground textures for the various kinds of terrain types can cause some graphical oddities.



Turn 7. We're slowly rolling forwards, most of the BT-5's are gone by now.





Some nice flames and bursts of automatic fire, in both cases "danger close" to hitting the tank commander of another Panzer IIB. In the second screenshot, the Panzer IIB is about to destroy a BA-10, pretty impressive at that range (over 600 meters, IIRC).



My recon units are happy to do something for a change.



The end. The ZiS-3 was in the woods near the first flag.

Battle 22. Legendary victory.

This was the first battle where 4 T-34's appeared. Soviet tank numbers are starting to increase, which is good as it's more challenging.

The plan was to move the platoon of 5 Panzer 38(t)E's forwards in the direction of the trains, so the T-34's wouldn't be able to spot them. I expected the T-34's to move towards the flags, which are off-screen to the southwest, thus exposing their flanks to my Panzers.

The plan worked, after a short duel the T-34's were destroyed by turn 7.

Battle 23. Legendary victory. Same map again.



Red circle: 4 T-34's and 2 45mm AT guns.

The plan was to destroy one of the 45mm AT guns, the one I could see, with the HQ tanks and then back off towards the 5 other Panzer 38(t)E's that were initially held in reserve until I knew which way the T-34's were headed, as in this case there were flags off-screen to the southwest and one to the east. In the end, 3 T-34's went to the southern flags and only 1 went to the eastern one.

I used the woods to duel with the T-34's at close range and from angles they couldn't see clearly.

The Panzer IIB's and the Sd.Kfz. 222's guarded the eastern flag.

My infantry would deal with the Soviet infantry trying to sneak up on the southern flags by hugging the edge of the map.

I'm now in April 1942, at battle 39 or 40. I'll update the AAR soon.

I've played a number of battles today and was hoping to reach the refitting point in May, but the 300mm homing missiles the Soviets are firing at me halfway through a battle are causing a lot of pain in the battle I'm playing now, so I'll have to play the battle over and over until the Soviets keep failing their radio checks, it seems. As I'm defending, moving around every phase isn't really an option and even if I do, it usually doesn't help much. The Katyusha's cover a wide area and even a scratch tends to destroy a tank. I rarely see a tank simply get damaged by Katyusha fire, it's almost always destroyed.

It's really annoying to prepare a good defensive position, only to have the Soviets send rockets over that they shouldn't even have at this point to wreck my tanks. The "insult to injury" part is that the primary German support asset, the Luftwaffe, is more or less completely useless currently.

If you send me the random campaign scenario files, I can edit out those 300mm Katyushas.

Stukas should work much better in the first update (as far as logical targeting) and new random campaigns will not have 300mm Katyushas in them (among other heavy artillery) thanks to the pain you went through and the feedback you provided.

Removing the 300mm's would be removing the symptom, but not the problem, as the problem is their availability date and quantity/chance of appearance, not their effectiveness per se.

I don't know if changes to availability dates will have an effect on random campaigns, though, or if every battle is already configured at the start of the campaign (I'm not entirely sure what the random campaign initialization process does).

The Soviet heavy artillery is much more of a problem to the people who only play through a battle once. I can always restart. It's annoying, but I can still live with it. The 6 82mm Katyusha's that made the game crash were even quite amusing in a way. There's a certain comical charm to seeing the entire screen fill with rocket smoke and the game crashing, as if it wants to spare me the pain of watching what happened when the rockets hit the ground (2 tanks had already been destroyed).

Thanks to being able to speed up the battle (thank you for that feature, with all my heart: thank you), battles I need to play again don't necessarily last that long. If every battle would last an hour in real time, that would be much more of a problem.

After two more battles, 7th Panzer's veterans were sent to France for a well deserved rest, the division's equipment was also modernized. I was expecting some kind of transition screen explaining that the division went to France for several months, but the game simply jumped from battle 40 in April 1942 to battle 41 in January 1943.

7th Panzer now has Panzer IIIL's to replace their trusty Panzer 38(t)E's and Panzer IIF's to replace the Panzer IIB's. The latter upgrade isn't really a quantum leap, but it's still nice.

The early war Sd.Kfz.222's have been swapped for uparmoured versions.

My PzG's are now equipped with MG42's, not sure if there's much of a difference aside from the MG they're using.

I even had points to spend for the first battle in 1943. I didn't buy anything, though.

For some reason, the battle isn't numbered, unless I'm missing the line in the briefing screen detailing what battle it is. All the medals/awards/abilities did switch correctly to the units in their new vehicles.

As an aside: the lack of updates in the past ~2 weeks was due to WitE testing requiring all of my attention, not due to a fading interest. As it stands now, I'll play the campaign until the end.

The tweaks to the Artillery are intended to reduce the appearance of Medium artillery and eliminate the appearance of the heavy Artillery (203 and 300mm) in future random campaign games.

But these changes won't be in affect for any of your remaning battles. But Erik ( or I) could edit them out of your remaining battles.

Red circles: 3 T-34's and 1 BT-7, with 2 T-34's on the left and a T-34 and BT-7 on the right.

My tanks are in ambush positions on a downward slope. As soon as the T-34's would reach the top of the slope, they would expose their flanks and would be shot. The plan worked, although there was a hairy moment when two of the T-34's came across it a bit too close to my tanks for flanking shots, luckily my HQ tanks saved the day and distracted the T-34's long enough for the other tanks to score good hits.

Battle 26.



The start, all enemy tanks are visible in the screenshot, but they can't see mine due to them being in a lower part of the terrain.

Unfortunately for them, my FlaK 36 could see them clearly from its position a few meters behind the edge of the treeline (so the enemy tanks couldn't see it).



Turn 2. Always a good sight for the German player: a line of burning or destroyed T-34's from their starting points pointing towards the flag. FlaK 36's easily win "king of the hill" contests as long as they're in cover.



The end. I've turned the camera in the direction where most of the AI infantry and a few AT guns were concentrated.

The AT guns were north of the east-west road, right of the center of the screenshot.

Turkey shoot of T-26's, they were all gone within 80 seconds.



The end, my tanks have started to counterattack. This was one of the few battles where the enemy attack was stopped before it had a chance to get going. None of the T-26's even had a chance to move.

There was also a BT-7 at the left flank, but that was shot as soon as it was spotted.
