Enemy spotted 999

Post by SS Hauptsturmfuhrer »

I have an odd error that comes up sometimes during battle. When I click on the target button for a unit to show me what enemy it can fire at, it sometimes jumps to a corner of the map with the number 999 shown as the targeting info. It seems to happen when the unit has a hidden enemy unit targeted and ready to be fired upon (fire icon is lit up) but I cannot see the unit on my screen.

Is there any information on this?

What type of unit is doing the targeting? Sometimes when using the Target button for forts and other immobile units, the target system (red hex and connecting line) will jump to the far corner if the enemy unit is outside the LOF of the friendly unit. It means it can "see" the enemy, but not fire at it. And trying to do so will result in an enemy OpFire, since the friendly "attempted" a fire order, even though it never actually shot.

I'm getting this error from both tanks and infantry. The unit's fire icon is lit up and ready to fire on a hidden enemy that is not visible on the screen. For example, in my first battle of Korsun, the hidden ATG's were repeatedly becoming visible and then disappearing so my tanks were firing at them over and over despite me not being able to see them, but when I clicked on the target button to check if other targets were in range, the screen jumped to a corner and displayed a 999. I'll try to take a screenshot in my current battle cause I get it a lot from units firing on Russians that are hidden in the smoke and trees on Horseshoe.

This happens when your unit has lost sight of the enemy it was previously firing at.
IIRC

It seems that is the cause of it. I'm considering it to be a minor glitch when it gives me the 999 result as it doesn't affect the gameplay.

Don't know about the 999 aspect, but you can always shoot at an "invisible" target as long as your unit maintains targetting from one turn to the next. If you switch targets, however, you'll lose the targetting on the invisible unit for good.

Here is a picture of the 999 error. Two seperate units on the objective far to the south both cited this as a target on the same turn. I confirmed that there is no unit on that targeted hex because I took it over on the same turn. It is a bit baffling.
