Windows 2000 Save Game Abort

Post by Don Bowen »

I'm testing WAW on my Windows 2000 (Professional) system at work (no one tell the boss) before I consider buying Win2000 for home.

Almost everything works fine, but when I hit the Save Game button, it just blinks and goes back to desktop. No message, no nothing!

Is this a game/Windows 2000 incompatability?

Hi, Don!

I've been playing SPWAW right from version 1.0 using Win2K Pro - no problems at all.

Maybe it has something to do with your permissions as set up by the Administrator...

If you are considering Win2K, I can tell you it's the best hing ever developed by Microsoft. I work at home and use Win2K heavily and have not had ANY problem with it.

No, I'm not connected with Microsoft in any way. Image

I don't think it is permissions. The directory is wide open - "everyone" has the full access set. And, the abort happens before I can specify a saved game filename. You just select savegame and immediately get to admire your desktop wallpaper.

Since I can load and save scenarios and can load saved games, I'm guessing it may have something to do with the Save Game code itself. Perhaps something with the limited save for PBM????

Anyway, all else works fine, which is very nice. I'll try and find another Win2000 system to test on.

Don,

I experience the same bug in Windows 95 OSR2. No answers, but here's a shot in the dark. The first time I fixed it by fixing illegal long file names in the save & email directories. Check your file structure.

Unfortunately, the bug came back, and this fix doesn't work anymore (still getting bad long file names) -- meaning it really isn't the problem. Image

Oops, nevermind.

Problem appears to have been caused when I copied the save files to the Win2000 System. In so doing I had editted the .cmt to change the name of the saved game (from "Big F*** Mess" to "Test Game") just in case someone at work saw it.

Blew up at work (Win2000) and then tonight it also blew up at home (Win98). Deleted that one save game and problem disappeared! There must be some kind of check for changes to these files ...
