Confused on versions of this game

Hello!

I'm looking for a version of Steel Panthers that can go higher that the 800x600 resolution. I know shrapnel games sells their version for $40, but that's a little steep for me for a 10+ year old game.

is there another version of SP that has a higher resolution that's free or less expensive?

Thanks

No. Shrapnel's WinSPWW2 and WinSPMBT are also available for free, but are stuck at one resolution only. For more resolutions you either pay up or give up.

Thank you Matti

I guess I get this game. Nothing like it on the market (until Steel Tigers, I guess but that's years away).

I think it is worth of mention that Shrapnel & Camo Workshop still update their Steel Panthers (WinSPWW2 & WinSPMBT). Matrix's SPWAW hasn't got official update for many years. But Major Mess has made heroic deed by putting together SPWAW, its latest patches, and Enhanced mod into one installer package and will keep updating it.

With SP:WaW you get The Most Fully Functional Version for FREE.
Get 2016 from that link Matti posted if you didn't yet.

What do you mean? SPWAW hasn't gotten official update for many years while those are still made for WinSPWW2. Also I've read that one has a filter for opportunity fire: ATGs don't need to reveal their positions anymore by opfiring Jeeps.

What I mean is you do not have to pay to unlock features in SP:WaW.
With Shrapnel's WinSPWW2 you have to pay to get the fully functional version.

SP:WaW comes fully functional for free.

WinSPWW2 is not the same game as SP:WaW even though many people seem to lump them together as different versions of the same game, they are not that at all. They are similar games but are built on completely different engines.

The features you mention like opfire filtering are nice, but the engine of WinSPWW2 itself does not appeal to me enough to make it better than SP:WaW. That's too bad because it would be really neat if it did due to the upgrading they do with it.
