How are things with Russian Steel?

How are things with Russian Steel?

Post by Penetrator »

An old bastard here; I just wanted to find out if Russian Steel is out there and warped as ever. Made a little input back then as I remember it. Are we having fun at all?

There's a thread regarding Russian Steel in the campaigns/scenarios sub-forum: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29073

I get the feeling that everyone's in a 'holding pattern' until the H2H and v7.2 patches are released.

Penetrator,

"Made a little input back then as I remember it." is an understatement...you designed near half the battles IIR...

Greetings!

RS 1.5 is available - it gets the player to Feb 1943 in the Caucasus...over 40 battles

Was just starting the next three battles (Kharkov) when work commitments overwhelmed me...

Made me sad because Kursk was next - have a nicely laid out treatment of III Pz Corps front in four battles....

The player will probably learn to despise Tigers if this bunch ever gets built...

That was in January IIR. RS 1.5 also featured further refinements on the first 6 battles and some "bug' fixes - bad branches and such...

Frankly, RS 1.5 is fairly solid and, barring effective feedback from players, unlikely to be revisited. The later war battles beckon if ever I get back to this project...

Tankhead was planning to host RS 1.5 but something seems to have gone wrong - he has not updated the Russian Steel page and I have not heard from him in a long time. I hope he's doing well.

I've sent RS 1.5 to over 20 players via email - it's tedious but it works...

Haven't had much feedback - most of what I have was positive - one AAR was rather critical but did result in some enhancements...

Nice to see on the forums once more.

RS 1.5 files

Post by pbhawkin1 »

So does that mean that no-one is hosting 1.5?
If not then could some kind person send them to my email address? As it is I am still playing 1.3!

Sir!

1.5 is in the email (assuming a lack of operator errors on my part....

1.5 is the complete campaign - it should simply overwrite earlier versions..

Hope all goes well.

G/R,

Haven't thought about converting to H2H - what's involved?

As far as continuing - time permitting, I'd like to push farther into 1943....work commitments remain overwhelming though...

I've heard that 7.2 might come out - that might be a good excuse to push out a few more battles...

I was working on a March 1943 Kharkhov fight but the map I borrowed had some 'features' - such a tanks driving through buildings! Had to stop before reworking the map...

At Battle 17, you only have 20+ left to go....you'll be hitting Penetrator's designs by Battle 20...all I can say is to brace yourself! As a designer, he shows no mercy!

Cheers,

Brad

To convert to SPH2H there are mainly 3 thinghs to do:
1) Charge the Russian Steel Campaign in SPH2H (this is the easy part ;))
2) Review all the battles looking for OOB inconsistencies (when you move from one version to another what may happen is that a what you see as a PzIII in SPWaW 7.1 is a Stug in SPH2H ... of what is a SS Inf. Sqd in SPWaW 7.1 is a Special Op unit in SPH2H ... so this have to be checked)
3) Fix the prices according to SPH2H prices ... example: you allways give 105 points in SPWaW to buy 3 Med Truck plt. as support forces ... what you have to do is see how much 3 med truck plt costs in SPH2H

I think that's it.
I have been thinking in doing the conversion myself ... but I have absolutly not time right now ... and I'll have even less time in the future :(

If you didn't try SPH2H, I strongly recomends you ...
Soviets worst in SPH2H than in SPWaW (in terms of experience and leader ranking) but they are really cheap!

Gallo Rojo,

The H2H sounds interesting - I will need to play it a little to get a feel for the changes....

I still hope to do late war battles though - some of the most interesting systems don't show up until 1944-45....

AC:

For reasons that I have forgotten, RS 1.5 is presently in three zip files: 1.2M, 1.2M, and 0.8M respectively...

I can send three messages, each with an attachment < 2M

Let me know if that works for you.

------------------------------------------------

FrankW: Hi! Your offer sounds good - I will see if I can get RS 1.5 into a single zip file. I can also send you as much or as little intro text as desired. The nice layout with pictures is Tankhead's - I know Fabio Prado has some original material too - he hosted RS first and then Tankhead took over following some ISP wrangling...

I'll let you know when the single file is ready.

Post by Gallo Rojo »

question:
I have just fought battle # 24 "Spartakova Raid" and get a Desicive Victory.
Then the Campaign send me directly to Battle # 27 "Serafimovich Assault" ... Is this right? Souldn't I have to fight some battles inside Stalingrad before that?
Last patch I have says RS14 ... is there another pach arrown?

Campaign Score: 48 Points
23 battles fought
Minor Victories: 8
Decisive Victories 7
The rest are draws (I'm trying to keep my core force alive, not to be a hero).
