V6.1 vs. W2000

Just asking for your advice.

Installed SP:WAW today on my comp running W2000.
A few problems: Startup movie sequence doesn't play? This is easily resolved by just skipping it, but is it supposed to work?

Suffered a CTD as well, but I guess those things happen? (never did under 98se, but anyway..)

So, anyone else running W2000 having problems, and more importantly - anyone know how to solve them?

I worked most of teh 7.0 deveolpment on a Win2k box (since upgraded to XP, the only consistent problem is the NT related "C2 not working in the MC" bug.

WIN 2k and some sound cards do not get along well, most CTDs are either memory or sound card related.TRy forcing your sound system into "compatibility mode" or use the "legacy mode" Also try turning any hardware accelerated sound effects off

Thanx Paul, I'll try that.
I've got an AMD board with built-in soundcard, but that shouldn't cause more trouble than regular PCI sound cards, should it?

If it doesn't work, I guess I can live with it, will upgrade(?) to XP anytime soon.

I am playing version 7.0b6 on Win 2000 Pro and I have no problems. I have an onboard sound card like you. Maybe you want to search for the latest drivers to the soundcard.

I would try updating your video card drivers. Thats what happened to me when I installed 2000. Just my 2 cents

Never had a problem with any version of SPWAW under Win2000...

until updating DirectX to version 8.1!

Then I have had a few crash-to-desktop during long artillary bombardments with allied naval guns. Also, one or two "can not initialize" errors which go away after rebooting. Not a huge problem if I save frequently. I am considering rolling back DirectX to version 8.

Running latest versions of SPWAW with all the officially released patches. No Yugo bug or ver. 7 OOB's. No other problems with my system or software.

To Color, Commando Solo and 11Bravo:

Hmm.. good suggestions. My videocard drivers are new (using Nvidia's Detonator XP driver on my TNT2 ultra), soundcard drivers could use an update (using the driver that was shipped along with the card -- maybe two months old).

And - I too experienced more trouble after the update to DirectX 8.1!! Is there a way to fool the system back into, say, 8.0 or something?

(btw.. I've been away for too long I see... is there a v7.0 to SP:WAW? )

According to Microsoft's website, DirectX 8.1 overwrites the previous version and can not be uninstalled. It also comes with Windows XP, so if there is a bug, I expect relatively quick action.

I believe version 7 of SPWAW will be mainly a OOB fix, and a MC bug fix, and will be distributed with the new MegaCampaign Lost Victories sometime soon

The glorious battles of PC configuration...almost a wargame in itself...don;t get me started on the hoops I'm jumping through trying to get an Audigy card working in digital mode on my Micron (Tyan MB) 667...

Makes one want to give in to the dark side and buy an X_box...

Thanx for the link, Doom.

The gawdawful 8.1 is bye-bye. Remains to be seen if X8.0 will work better.
