Quick Start Crash, again and again

Getting a consistent crash to desktop whenever I try to play a game on 'Quick Start' using 1.04. I have installed/reinstalled twice. I've tried 1.05 with same result.
The only patch that does not crash is 1.02.
I've seen this problem reported before on these forums and yet there is no fix. This is frankly inexcusable.
