Fighter or Fighter Bomber

Post by Chris21wen »

Anybody know why the Reppu is classified as a Fighter and not a Fighter bomber? It's more manouverable, faster etc thean the Zeke but it can carry as much load Actually what determines when any plane is a F or FB?

Is there a difference in the game between a fighter and a fighterbomber except for that you find them in different columns?

I believe that a fighter-bomber set to nav attack (regardless of altitude) will drop down to 100' to strafe Barges and PTs if they present at targets of opportunity.  Wherease (pure) fighters must specifically be set to 100' if you want them to attack Barges and PTs.

Also, if i recall the rules correctly, fighter bombers will not engage in a dogfight if they encounter cap.

Only of set to bomb otherwise they act as a fighter in every respect.

Actually in my PBEM, my fighter-bombers are set to 10000 altitude and dropping 250 lbs bombs on barges. No strafing at all.

AFAIK, the fighter/fighter-bomber distinction is purely an AI tool to help it prioritise regarding mission selection.

I have upgraded the AVG to P-38Gs FB.  They're flying naval missions in stock, and they seem to be dropping to 2000 feet to release their bombs like dive bombers!  They're based in Wuchow and it's made getting shipping into and out of Canton and HK hell for the AI.  Is this some 80+ experience thing?

No they semi-dive bomb. Other aircraft do this same tactic when bombing.

The only info I can find on what constitutes classification as a F/B is that it performs Close air support. An Attack aircraft with fighter abilities also. The US Army designated all of it's Fighters as P aircraft. Meaning Pursuit.
The word "fighter" did not become the official British term for a single seat fighter until after the First World War. In the RFC/RAF such aircraft continued to be called "scouts" into the early 1920s. The U.S. Army called their fighters "pursuit" aircraft (reflected by their designation in the "P" series) from 1916 until the late 1940s. In the French and German languages the term used (and still in use) literally means "hunter". This has been followed in most other languages, an exception being Russian, in which the fighter is called "èñòðåáèòåëü" (pronounced "istrebitel") which is literally "exterminator".

Some units (esp with PDU on), can cross over between F and FB.  Like the Australian Throwaways (FB), can sometimes upgrade to Kitty I and Hurri IIb (depending on the scenario).  Often times tho, once you change the path, the former route is closed.
