AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/18/42 –

A pretty boring turn - here are the high points:

The Animals continue to beat up green dots: Kiriwina Island and Dadjangas are invaded.

Some more Animal troops unload at Cagayan. An attack here by the Animals is repulsed.

Various Chinese units in China, and remnant units in the D.E.I., New Guinea, and the Philippines are bombed.

The AK Tottori Maru is torpedoed by SS KVIII and is heavily damaged.

Allied and Animal troops at Noumea shell each other.

China is again the most interesting area: An Allied attack in the North near Yangku is repulsed, but the Allied troops manage to inflict about twice as many casualties as they received.

Last turn, Field Marshall Mike’s forces crossed the river to attack Nanchang. Today, the Chinese Army at Nanchang attacks and pushes back the Japanese across the river (13th Army HQ, 34th Division, 14th Independent Brigade, 14th Field Artillery Regiment, 11th Independent Brigade, and 4th Mortar Battalion).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/19/42:

The usual bombing of the Chinese, and various Allied troop remants around the S.R.A. are likewise bombed...

More dot bases are invaded: Kiriwina Island is invaded.

Dadjangas is invaded and the Allies shell the invading troops.

AP Kitsurin Maru sinks at Kendari from 250 pound bombs. (Hit at Bali on 4th February - 10 points (point values will give an idea of the relative size of the ship.) It took six weeks for this guy to sink!

There are the usually artillery exchanges at Noumea.

Honan is bombarded, but the Chinese have already pulled out. This extra day allows a good chunk of the supplies to be pulled out as well.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/20/42 –
Here are the highlights for the turn:
I-27 torpedoes the AO Sabine about 420 miles ENE of Suva. Sabine is on fire but it stays afloat.

In retaliation, an Allied ASW TF locates an I-boat NE of Pago Pago and works it over... I-4 receives heavy damage... it staggers off to the NW, apparently making for Kwaljalein, but it never gets there, sinking near Mili on an uncertain date.

There are the usual round of bombings in China, PI, and the SRA, as well as artillery exchanges at Noumea.

Honan is no longer occupied, and most of the supplies have been removed. Mike’s forces capture the city. The Chinese withdraw (unmolested) to Sian.

Mike’s troops shock attack at Ningpo, reducing the forts, but suffering over 2000 casualties. They outnumber the defenders better than 2 to 1, but the defenders take only about 1/4 the casualties.

Mike also attacks at 50,40 (just east of Pucheng). He outnumbers the defenders 2 to 1, but his troops suffer 176 to 36 casualties. The Chinese remain in place.

Bruce attempts to clean up the Philippines - he attacks at Cagayan, and captures it, while the Allies withdraw to the west.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/21/42 – The usual stuff happens in the usual places: siege of Noumea continues, Chinese troops get bombed by Animal airplanes, various “dot” bases get invaded and captured. Aside from this, the main action is in China:

A Chinese army is driving east towards the coast - and they encounter a small blocking force west of Hangchow, which is probed this turn prior to a planned attack next turn.

A shock attack by Mike at Ningpo forces the defenders to withdraw south... but another attack to the west is repelled. Both attacks cause heavy casualties for the Animals.

Not the Sabine! [X(], one of my favorite tankers.[8D]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

Do you have a favorite for each class? Favorite AK? Favorite AP? [:D] i hadn't ever thought of a "favorite" for any of the non-fighting ships...

Well to be honest I like the name because it reminded me of high school french class.
We all got "french" names in place of our real names and one of the girls I had a crush on was named Sabine.[:)]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/22/42 – Sorry for the delay - I had to be out of town for a while, which always messes me up for days before, and days afterwards...

Anyway, back to the action:

Most of the air action is bombing in China and remnants around various spots in the DEI and New Guinea.

There is ground fighting in China: The Animals attacked SE of Kangshuin, and drove a third of a Chinese Corp (about equivalent to a battalion) back into the city.

The Chinese 1st Group Army continues to drive on Hangchow, driving a half-bridgade into Hangchow - inflicting almost 1100 Animal casualties to about 200.

The other action is all submarine based:
SS I-27 is slightly damaged by an ASW attack.
AK Tairai Maru is attacked on the surface by SS KXVII and has 9 shell hits, then a torpedo, is set on fire with heavy damage and then SINKS with along with her Captain. The same sub then torpedoes AP Kisogawa Maru, setting her on fire as well.

There are also the set of bombardments at Noumea...

This is the calm before the storm...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/23/42 – Another “calm before the storm” turn - there are the usual bombings of Chinese troops, and cut-off troops that haven’t starved yet, as well as bombardments at Noumea and Pucheng...

Other than that, all the action is sub-oriented:
SS KX is slightly damaged off Kuala by 7 escorts, S-42 is thwarted from making an attack on the KB near Noumea, and in the “class” move of the day, the DD Wakatake and Yukaze catch SS KXV on the surface, shoot her up (26 shell hits) and put two torpedoes into her for good measure! [X(] [8|]

The only significant land action is near Yangku: three Animal brigades attack about an equal number of Chinese troops (who have fewer artillery pieces, are low on supply and morale) and push them across the river into Yenan. The Chinese manage to inflict 757 to 180 casualties, though.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/24/42 – This was another boring, calm-before-the-storm turn [>:]... there were the usual bombardments at Noumea, and the usual bombing of the hapless Chinese troops by Field Marshall Solli’s aircraft, and the usual ASW attacks, and minefield encounters (no mine hits, and no subs damaged).

The War Against the Dot Bases continues with Deboyne Island falling to the Animals.

The only action again was in China, where the IJA pushed some troops that were retreating east of Honan back a bit more quickly.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/25/42 – OK - things starting to happen now:

There is a recon mission of a BABS over Port Blair (never a good sign) and who should show up but the IJN, landing rabid dogs unto partially fortified beaches of the Andamans:

TF 95 encounters mine field at Port Blair (23,34)
TF 95 troops unloading over beach at Port Blair, 23,34
Japanese Ships
PC Ch 18
PG Tatsumiya Maru
APD Patrol Boat No. 32
APD Patrol Boat No. 39
Coastal Guns at Port Blair, 23,34, firing at TF 95
148 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
DD Arashi
AP Hokuriku Maru
PC Ch 18
APD Patrol Boat No. 39
APD Patrol Boat No. 32
Japanese ground losses:
742 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the same time, another TF discharges more animals at Davao:
TF 220 encounters mine field at Davao (43,61)
TF 220 troops unloading over beach at Davao, 43,61
Japanese Ships
MSW Toshi Maru #5
MSW Toshi Maru #1
Coastal Guns at Davao, 43,61, firing at TF 220
173 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
MSW Toshi Maru #5, Shell hits 7
Japanese ground losses:
728 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both are significant moves, presumably under direction of Bruce...
Otherwise, the Chinese get bombed again, Noumea has an exchange of artillery, and another sub has an attack foiled when the torps fail to detonate. [8|]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/26/42 – The Animal landings at Port Blair continued... I thought I was pretty well prepared for an invasion, but little did I know what Bruce was about to do - several TFs start disgorging rabid dogs onto the beaches:
TF 45 encounters mine field at Port Blair (23,34)
TF 45 troops unloading over beach at Port Blair, 23,34
Japanese Ships
MSW W.3
MSW W.2
MSW W.1
APD Patrol Boat No. 34
APD Patrol Boat No. 33
AK Mexico Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
Japanese ground losses:
24 casualties reported
Coastal Guns at Port Blair, 23,34, firing at TF 45
46 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
MSW W.3, Shell hits 10
Japanese ground losses:
457 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coastal Guns at Port Blair, 23,34, firing at TF 104
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 104 encounters mine field at Port Blair (23,34)
TF 104 troops unloading over beach at Port Blair, 23,34
23 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
AV Kamikawa Maru, Shell hits 5
Japanese ground losses:
36 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 158 encounters mine field at Port Blair (23,34)
TF 158 troops unloading over beach at Port Blair, 23,34
Japanese Ships
MSW Ranzan Maru
MSW W.4
PC Ch 8
Coastal Guns at Port Blair, 23,34, firing at TF 158
32 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
PC Ch 8, Shell hits 4
Japanese ground losses:
763 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coastal Guns at Port Blair, 23,34, firing at TF 193
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 193 encounters mine field at Port Blair (23,34)
TF 193 troops unloading over beach at Port Blair, 23,34
Japanese ground losses:
32 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the end of the turn, I knew the defenders of Port Blair were in trouble once I saw what was landing: I think the defenders could stand off a couple of regiments, but not a couple of regiments AND the Guards (2nd) Division! Next turn, I start to evacuate the troops still there by air:
Ground combat at Port Blair
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 2097 troops, 37 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 100
Defending force 27675 troops, 67 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 691 – 4th Mixed Regiment, 4th Engineer Regiment, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 18th Field Artillery Regiment, Guards (2nd) Division, Yokosuka 4th SNLF

Landing continue at Davao, and there are the usual bombings in China, and artillery exchanges in Noumea.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In sub actions: the Dutch sub SS KX is sunk by escorts near Port Blair, and AK Tottorri Maru sinks at Balikpapan - from the effects of a 533 mm W1 torpedo- she was hit on 3/18/42 by SS KVIII when carrying troops 120 south of Balikpapan. Apparently, the rest of her troops were able to get off before she slowly sunk... I sort of like these little “Easter Eggs” - at least one ship has taken 6 weeks to sink. On the other hand, it would have been a lot more effective had the ship sank immediately after it was torpedoed.

Anyway, the current game time is 31 May 1942... i will start posting more to catch this up in the next few days.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/27/42 – As you may or may not remember from some months ago, the Animals have invaded Noumea, and are trying to thrust into Burma, threatening Rangoon but my defenders are behind a river and Bruce (the commander on this front) has not elected to attack across the river - yet. A strong force has landed at Port Blair, though, forcing me (the British commander) to start evacuating the relatively small defending force at Port Blair:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 45 encounters mine field at Port Blair (23,34)
TFs 45 (x2), 98 (x 2), 104 (x2), 158 (x2), 193 troops unloading over beach at Port Blair, 23,34
Japanese Ships
MSW W.3
MSW W.2
MSW W.1
APD Patrol Boat No. 35
APD Patrol Boat No. 34
APD Patrol Boat No. 33
AK Mexico Maru, Mine hits 2, on fire, heavy damage – hits a VH2 Dutch mine, (the second mine she’s struck), then later in the turn she hits a third mine, a Mark 10 mine this time... and sinks, officially from Mark 10 mine (7 points!)

APD Patrol Boat No. 35
Japanese ground losses:
537 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Coastal Guns at Port Blair, 23,34, firing at various TFs

B-17D Fortress x 3
No Allied losses
Japanese Ships
AP Ussuri Maru

Japanese Ships
DD Wakatake, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Arashio
DD Michishio
DD Oshio
DD Asashio
Allied Ships
SS Rover – two torpdoes fired
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The IJA gets in on the attack on Port Blair:
Day Air attack on 18th British Division, at 23,34 – overcast
Japanese aircraft – from Victoria Point
A6M2 Zero x 20
Ki-48-I Lily x 15 – 27th Light Sentai
Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-48-I Lily: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Ki-48-I Lily bombing at 11000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the end of the turn, the amount of overkill Bruce has brought to Port Blair becomes even more obvious... did Bruce overestimate the forces here? Did he just not want to spend a lot of time in the conquest? Or is something else up his sleeve?
Ground combat at Port Blair
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 1906 troops, 35 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 87
Defending force 34757 troops, 117 guns, 34 vehicles, Assault Value = 727 – 4th Mixed Regiment, 3rd Heavy Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Engineer Regiment, 31st Division, 18th Heavy Field Artillery Regiment, Guards (2nd) Division, Yokosuka 4th SNLF, 4th Tank Regiment
Japanese ground losses:
11 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another Allied “stronghold” invaded and captured:
TF 166 troops unloading over beach at Rossel Island, 60,99
Ground combat at Rossel Island
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 495 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 16 – 14th NLF
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0
Japanese max assault: 11 - adjusted assault: 13
Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1
Japanese assault odds: 13 to 1 (fort level 0)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Rossel Island base !!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More troops are unloaded at Davao:
Coastal Guns at Davao, 43,61, firing at TF 220
TF 220 encounters mine field at Davao (43,61)
TF 220 troops unloading over beach at Davao, 43,61
Japanese ground losses:
12 casualties reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, by the end of the turn, things are looking a bleak for the cut-off Filipino defenders:
Ground combat at Davao
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 5334 troops, 47 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 152
Defending force 15926 troops, 79 guns, 80 vehicles, Assault Value = 266 – 8th Heavy Field Artillery Regiment, 8th Tank Regiment, 2nd Division
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is one of those things that never happened in real life but happen in WITP: A torpedo duel on the surface between a sub and a surface warfare task force: [X(] [8|] [:D]
Sub attack at 69,118
Japanese Ships
CL Abukuma – Greenling fired two torpedoes at Abukuma which ran deep, then fired 2 more that failed to detonate...
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze
DD Hamakaze
DD Urakaze
Allied Ships
SS Greenling, hits 10, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage – SINKS!!! along with her aggressive but imprudent C.O.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are also the usual air attacks in China, and the Animals bomb a few cut-off Allied units here and there, and there are artillery bombardments in Noumea and Davao (mentioned above).

Allied ground losses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are the usual rounds of Japanese air attacks on Chinese units, as well as some artillery duals in Noumea.

Now that Bruce has 3+ divisions ashore at Port Blair, what is he going to do with them? Is he planning to attack Rangoon via amphibious assault? This would be very costly, and could well fail. Maybe he is planning to land them back in Malaya and move them up the coast to make a concerted river crossing. This would be much safer and less costly, I think, but would take a lot more time.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/29/42 – the calm after the storm. Nothing much happened at all this turn accept for a failed sub attack, the usual bombing of Chinese troops by a certain squirrelish commander, bombing of various isolated troops, and the artillery exchanges at Noumea. One interesting air attack was mounted from Darwin:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 29,77 – overcast

Other than that, things were pretty boring... the Brits are building forts throughout Burma at top speed (no ports or airfield construction), and Niceguy’s troops a holding on at Noumea. C-I-C Speedy has floated a plan to retake Wake Island, and forces gather in CenPac for this attempt.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/30/42 – another boring turn... there were various ineffective attacks on convoys by planes and a sub, attacks on Chinese troops and cut off troops, bombardment attacks at Noumea, and USS Sailfish managed to torpedo the AK Tosei Maru near Foochow (but she is still afloat). The AK Gosei Maru hit two more mines at Port Blair and sinks. The only other thing of notice was and attack at 50,30 (north China) by the IJA 7th Independent Brigade and 10th Independent Brigade on the retreating 9th Chinese Corp/A which caused them to retreat a bit faster... strangely enough, the Chinese manage to inflict almost 10 to 1 casualties on the Japanese despite being heavily outnumbered.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/31/42 – Bruce is has not made any big moves in Burma (yet). A convoy at Tavoy is spotted and attacked by Blenheim and Hudsons, escorted by some Hurricanes. They are intercepted by Oscars which force some Blenheim Is to turn back, but the AK Kansai Maru is hit by 2 bombs.

There is some excitement in China: 14 Chinese Corps with 3 HQ units supported by 9 artillery regiments that have reached Hangchow and start bombarding it. The Japanese have gotten 1 unit into Pucheng and bombard there. Five Animal units are moving on Wenchow.

Meanwhile, the usual air attacks and bombardments at Noumea occur.

Here's the intel report compared to the prior one (from 6 March 42):

EDIT: Keep your eye on the ship losses numbers - things are going to take a dramatic leap coming up in the next few game weeks! [X(]
