Rescuing remnants w/o a port?

As Dutch units get pushed out of island bases, they often end up in hexes with no base but on a coast. Can these be embarked onto visiting SS from a coastal hex with no port? Its to dangerous to risk a AK or AP due to Japanese air umbrella and the likely need to stay there several days.

Well I've never tried it but I do know that I seem to be able to get troops on to a sub only when they are in strategic mode (thus I think they have to be in some sort of port but I'm not totally sure with out game testing). So that is a danger as the troops are then more vulnerable to air attack due to their mode. In my current game I was able to do a "Dunkirk" from Malaysia right out from under my opponent's nose even though he had air superiority (I did have a Brit CV, but as you all know they have a very small airgroup). Maybe this was simply due to the fact that he was "looking" in other areas of the board. But I saved about 10,000 troops by using small fast transports (speed 19-22 knots) and simply moving them from the mainland to an off shore island. I was pleasantly surprised by the success and wanted to write Churchill but he didn't seem to respond. The good part about using ships is that the troops could remain in combat mode. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hal

Forget Strategic Mode as that's AE and this is WITP and there is no mode for LCUs in WITP.

I'm pretty sure I've done it with AKs or APs but I'm not sure I've ever tried it with a sub. Can't really see why not though. I'd be interested to hear how you get on.
