How to start a dedicated server?

Post by altmunster »

How do I do this? I have set up a local server, but I can't seem to set up the command line shortcut as specified in the manual.

Also, is is possible to run a dedicated server and play the game from the same machine?
Thanks

What happens when you use the -server command line parameter?

You can start a normal instance of Starshatter while running a dedicated server on the same machine.

I think that is the problem. How do I use the -server command line parameter? I must be doing it wrong.

I have tried to create a shortcut to the stars.exe file with the -server at the end and windows doesn't like that one bit.

Just add -server to the end of the target line, with a space between it and Stars.exe, in the shortcut's properties.

Here is what I do:

I set up a local server, which appears to work fine. So now in the Matrix Games directory there is a 'Server.cfg" file.

I go the the 'Stars' application in the Starshatter Subdirectory of the Matrix Games Directory and right click and hit 'Create Shortcut'. A shortcut is created and I right click on it and select Properties. In the Target line it says "C:\Matrix Games\Starshatter\Stars.exe" (the quotes are included in the targert line as well) I add -server after the exe and click 'Apply'.

The error message I get says 'The name 'C:\Matrix Games\Starshatter\Stars.exe'specified in the target box is not valid, make sure the path and filename are correct.

Any help in figure out what I am doing wrong will be much appreciated.

Make sure -server is outside of the quotes. Though, it should say "The name 'C:\Matrix Games\Starshatter\Stars.exe -server' specified in the target box is not valid..." if that were the case.
