Sneak Peak New Graphics

Post by Arjuna »

OK I couldn't resist. Here are a few shots showing the latest graphics. Please note that the new graphics are a work in progress - ie not finished yet. Also they have been saved as lossy jpeg format to fit under the attachment size limit, so they are a little fuzzy. Let us know what you think.

Hi Dave,

These shots are very nice.

Again, I'm not at all convinced that switching to more "real" graphics is better.
I'll say it again, the new maps look more like aerial photogaphs than topo maps. I don't know if it's the JPEG compression or not, but I cannot read them like the maps of the current game.
Where are the faked 3D representation of my men ? Where are the animated planes ? ;)

Interface improvements (like the new orders graphics) are very welcome. At last I'll be able to plot a decent plan (maybe).

Anyway, all this looks gorgeous, I can't wait. :D

Keep up with the good work.

JeF.

At first I didnt like the look of the graphics...but I like them alot better now...perhaps you can provide an option to switch between the new and old graphics?

Graphics

They look pretty good, but they also tend to hide the contour colours. I think I'd rather be able to see the contours more easily.

Wow ... I like those graphics very very much. I think it's a great compromise between photographs and maps (former might be too confusing and latter too sterile).

If I'm correct you are using vector graphics so it should be simple to include a mode where the contour lines are displayed on top of the terrain or is there one already?

I think that the graphics are an improvement on the original game, aesthetically at least. However, the counters now look quite incongruous against the more realistic background. My question would be whether these upgraded graphics will improve the gameplay? (i.e. will the maps be easier to 'read' than the old ones). If not, I'd prefer to stick with the old design.
Thankyou for using the World Wide Web. British designed, given freely to the World.

Good post hub.

Dave - I really like the work you've done! I think that letting the topo levels resemble vegetation colors is a good choice. Hub makes a good point about the trees, though. The shadows tend to obscure the ground color beneath them.

The new graphics are very nice :)

I have a suggestion though. I've always wanted a better way to get immediate, visual information about height data. The contour colors help but does not convey as much information as the LOS tool.

How about giving an option to display proper contour lines, perhaps with the ability to control the increment?

Features present in professional geografic information systems typically include ground shading and colorization of height information and once you've used them, you keep wanting them in AA ;)

Wow! I like the new graphics a lot, especially the towns.
Much softer looking overall and that's a good thing.

AA's maps are nice, but these are so much easier to read at a glance. Thanks guys. :)

I have the demo of the original game but not the full game.

The artwork of the original maps is very poor and was the one factoer that stopped me buying the game.

The new graphics make a huge difference.

I just wiish I understood the game mechanics as I don't have a manual.

I cannot even defeat the AI in the tutorials.

Its a river, that runs between Mittagong and Yerrandri. It flows into Warragamba.

Its situated in a beautiful wilderness area where I have done loads of bushwalking.

This year we plan to do a walk from Mittagong to Katoomba (about 4 days).

We are also in the early planning stages of a walk from the Brindabellas to Thredbo. About 10 - 14 days. Probably next April.

Be a man and do the Brindabellas in June. I have camped there in June. The water in the billy froze over night. The road out was frozen muud. I only had 2 wheels in those days and didn't fall off once comming out that frozen mud track.
