Is there an easy way to check on which units belong to the same formation...under the same HQ...?

Yes, there is a possibility. I don´t know it by heart, but I think you select a unit, then click on utilities and there on HQ. Now all units that belong to the same HQ should be marked in a light blue.

Move your cursor to a HQ, left-click on it so the crosshair is over the HQ, then press the "h"-key. This will highlight the fromation assigned to that HQ.
