Hexgrid maps

Hi there,
I'm a big fan of wargaming maps with hexes and was very disappointed that there weren't any in Southern Storm.
So I washed away this terrible affront to the world of old wargamers :? and redesigned all the maps in the game with hexagons.

To install them,
1 - Download the zip file HERE
2 - Unzip the maps contained in the archive in the Matrix Games\Flashpoint Campaigns Southern Storm\Modules\FCSS\Maps\Custom folder
They will automatically replace the original cards in the game without erasing them.
3 - Enjoy

Link doesn't seem to want to open, at least for me? I'll try again in a bit.

EDIT: Never mind. I had to copy the link and paste it in the URL bar. For some reason, it doesn't like to directly open French links I suppose! Probably my browser is a secret Francophobe!

Looks great but I'm an old timer. I have some sort of yearning for the old fashioned full grey hexes.

Cheers,
Chris

That is just perfect! Why are there squares as well. Is that some part of the game?

The squares are the Military Grid Reference System grid lines. The coordinate system of actual military maps.

The squares do nothing for the game though? They just seem like clutter on the map?

Squares are 1x1 kilometer, obviously they are of use, my guess...

Here are the Southern Storm maps, this time rendered without the 1km square grid, and with a black hex grid baked in.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/x7x1osnephv66 ... x.zip?dl=0 (140MB download).

Drop the maps in your Matrix Games\Flashpoint Campaigns Southern Storm\Modules\FCSS\Maps\Custom folder, and restart the game.

Good job, ;)

I have a question: how did you manage to remove the lines from the original files? Have you used Photoshop's Smart Replace feature?

The map graphics were simply generated anew, with a different grid baked in.
At OTS, we have developed an in-house render toolkit which we use to generate the map graphics (including the minimap, briefing maps, etc.) for all the maps, in the same consistent style.
It can generate maps with 1km square grids, but also maps with hex grids.

OK. It's cool.
I hope that one day this tool can be transformed into a map editor for the greatest happiness of scenario creators...

If you have some time, it would be really nice to publish here the maps of the game without the squares AND without the hexagons.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks to all for these great map options. I will see if I miss the 1km square grid or not. Truth is, I've somehow overlooked use of the military grid in both games.

Just to be clear, the Southern Storm maps shipping with the game have a 1km grid, not an MGRS 1km grid with the grid being MGRS aligned and featuring MGRS grid zone designators.
The numbers you see in map margin refer to hex row and column numbers, not northings and eastings.

I hope the maps are kept as they are in the future - with the grid, NOT hexes. I really hate hexes, as do many others. The present maps - as I said in here on day 1 - are really fantastic, a massive improvement. It's brilliant that William has now provided OPTIONAL hex maps for those who like such things. But I hope they remain optional. Thanks.
