AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/03/42

My regular high altitude raid over Rangoon is finally intercepted. Looks like the Tojo’s have the performance specs necessary to reach 36k+. My elite pilots manage to shoot one down and only suffered a couple damage results though.

Here’s a screen shot of one of my many Chinese infantry Corps that has slowly withered away due to inadequate supply in the games basic design. Less than a years fighting and it’s almost 2/3rds gone with only about 1/3rd of required supplies on hand. It’s nearly impossible to get units like these to increase in morale. I suspect the fact they are so under strength is what keeps their morale in the teens.

Image

I still have many full strength Corps that haven’t fought as intensely as my more withered units, but at this point those full strength Corps are all but impossible to keep supplied as their requirements are so much higher than the more withered units.

The allies get a little revenge when S boat S-33 surfaces near Thursday Island to engage a Japanese Barge fleet. This time the US fires its deck gun and scores a single hit. 1 shot 1 kill, AG-5068 is reported to have gone down.

B-17’s out of Canton Island try a high altitude attack on Baker Island and cause a little havoc for the complacent Japanese. I’m really starting to enjoy these high altitude raids for my bombers that fly unescorted missions.

While damage caused is light, it does add up over time (one plane a day keeps the Japanese at bay[:D]) and I lose far fewer bombers than a lower altitude attack would cause.

Since China is in so much trouble, I took a look at these groups this turn to try and get an idea of how long it will be before there is any chance of large numbers of transport groups arriving to try and lift sufficient supply into China from India.

Right now I have about 8-9 transport groups (all 8, 12 or 16 plane groups) lifting supply to China, but it simply isn’t enough to make a difference at this point.

As you can see only the 347th TOG and 317th TOG arrive anytime soon, and those groups arrive on the west coast. The rest of the large groups are almost a year out or more and won’t be any kind of a factor before China collapses.

It’ll take me 3-4 months to get the two big groups to India from the west coast if I decide to try and send them, so I doubt even those two groups will play any kind of role either.

It looks like China will have to tough it out as best it can with what's available now.

Ugh what a difference a little fatigue makes. I sent my bombers to Baker Island again this turn at high altitude with perhaps 10-15 fatigue from last turn’s raid. Six bombers were lost to his Tojo’s while only destroying two of his planes. Not a good day for my bombers.

Japan launches a couple ASW attacks east of Kavieng on S-47. While the first attack misses, the second one slams the sub hard causing major damage. What gets me is this was a mid ocean intercept as I know for a fact my sub moved this past turn. Either Japan had a lucky guess by plotting his task force into this hex, or it was pure dumb luck they stumbled upon my sub.

A Japanese ASW task force hunts for my Dutch sub SS KXVII Northwest of Rangoon. Japanese persistence costs them as the sub finally launches a counter-attack on the third ASW sweep and slams a fish into APD-31.

Allies launch their first big bomber raid over Port Moresby and are savaged by the defending Tony’s. Due to the large numbers of damaged Tony’s, allied planners pondered the possibility of a follow-up raid to catch some damaged planes on the ground. Chinese forces launch a deliberate attack again at Sian and succeed in reducing the fort levels at the base. A follow-up attack is scheduled to keep the pressure on. Japan launches a deliberate attack at Hengchow and gets soundly repulsed. Several of the Chinese units present have decent preparation points built up for the base, which is probably the only reason it didn’t go down on the first hit. Once Japans prep points go up some more (I’m assuming he has little or no prep built up yet) for their attacking forces, Hengchow will be in trouble.

Here’s a screen shot of the SS Argonaut, I know from past experience that it loses a good portion of its mine laying capacity if you allow it to upgrade. My question is how bad is it? It was probably more than a year ago in a game against the AI when I upgraded it and I no longer remember what changed.

Should I upgrade it or leave it alone? Anyone have a screenshot of an upgraded Argonaut? I'd really like to be able to see what changes in order to make a sound decision about leaving it as is or upgrading it.

The Agronaut will lose all of it's minelaying capacity if you uppgrade. It will become a crappy slow ordinary sub with more cargo capacity Do not do it.

Allied night fighters hit Rangoon in a night attack and do no damage. I’ll continue these night raids until further notice without reporting them again in the AAR unless good/unusual results are achieved.

It appears Japan has been shuffling his rear area fighter groups around trying to fool the allies into thinking he has more fighter strength in SE Asia than he really does. I hit Hanoi again this turn fully expecting to run into his Tojo’s again and was surprised to find no air defense over the base.

Results were however very disappointing as it appears my LB-30 group rolled poorly and only flew 14 planes out of a possible 48. Only 5 hits were scored on his Heavy Industry.

Japanese training raids and raids in China continue as usual.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Luganville’s airfield reaching level 5 a few turns ago, the allies launch their first raid on Lunga only to see very weird results. Even though my B-17’s shot down 2 defending Zeroes to the loss of only 1 B-17, only 1 hit was scored in the subsequent bombing of the Lunga base.

This kind of result is what I’d expect from 53 bombers hitting the base at night, NOT from a daylight raid (intercepted or not). I wonder if something has been changed in the new patch that hampers the accuracy of intercepted bomber groups? I know for a fact I’ve never been able to disrupt incoming Japanese raids so severely, but since the patch I haven’t really contested any Japanese bombing raids yet.

If it is a change affecting both sides, I think it is a very good change. But if it’s simply more nerfing of the 4E bombers then I am very disappointed.

Another Chinese attack at Sian manages to reduce the fort levels yet again. Unfortunately a new Japanese unit appeared on the rail line southeast of the base this turn forcing me to place my units back on defensive mode for now. I simply can’t risk attacking again with the possibility of a fresh Japanese division entering the hex with my units so tired from the past weeks fighting. I’ll give them some rest and test the waters against the soon to be stronger Japanese force in a few days.

A large Japanese Cruiser fleet appears off of Laysan and bombards the place. With so many Japanese cruisers in one location, allied planners wonder if KB isn't lurking about just over the horizon. Damage was light considering the number of 6 and 8 inch guns firing, and as there is no base to damage, nothing was left over that needed any kind of repairs other than a few damaged squads.

I rescued a large fragment of this unit (about 16 squads and twice as many support) from the Philippines and it has slowly been rebuilding over the last 6 months. With 121 squads and 178 support required, it will take well over a year for this unit to completely rebuild.

WitP needs to take another look at how quickly units rebuild. This unit averages about 1-2 squads a week and maybe only 1 support, even though it is sitting in a base with its Command HQ and well over 100,000 supplies.

Regimental/Brigade units should take perhaps 3 months max to rebuild and division's maybe 6-8 months. Currently I have 2-3 Indian Divisions in India that still have well over a year to go to rebuild from the 1/3rd strength they start the game at. And these units have been rebuilding for almost a full year already.

Overall this was a very quiet turn. I suspect things have reached the sitzkrieg stage of the game now as Japan hunkers down and awaits the allied onslaught. I’m not going to let a sense of want for action rule my play, patience and caution shall rule my hand.

That being said, I’ve begun to cast my eye about for where I want to strike first. So many choices so few assets, what’s an allied player to do? [&:][:D][:D]

Here's a screen shot of the 31st US Regimental Combat Team:

Image

Hi Jim, disagree here. If you are still keep an eye on my AAR you know about what i'm talking (can not disclose here about details - the enemy is listening!:). I have few units which are in condition similar as your regimental unit but i think that is a fair trade - both for the Allies and Japanese.

Evacuating cadres are, hmmm, questionable i dare to say, (don't get me wrong i do the same) and their rebuildment rate is OK. Latter in the game Allies will advance and Japan will have to evaucate cadres - but then youw will know that you won't see this unit for at least 6 months.[;)]

As for your question, i guess that you have more than enough replacements in the pool, right?

Try put a leader with good administrative skills....

The Chinese try one last attack at Sian and manage to reduce the fort levels once again. Unfortunately there is another unit Southeast of the city now and I doubt I’ll get away with any more successful attacks from here on out. Therefore my exhausted units are stood down for rest.

This turn I took a look at my Bogue class CVE Nassau and was shocked to see it had 108 planes onboard. All of the planes in its two groups are in a ready status and pilots are available for all of the planes.

I know CVE’s can (temporarily) increase group size when they are used in replenishment task forces, but I never thought they’d grow like this simply sitting in port at SF.

I tried forming a CV task force with the ship to see if the planes would be reduced once out of port, but the CVE still had 108 ready planes once I put it in the task force.

Has anyone else seen this? Is it a bug or am I missing something obvious here and this is normal behavior?

Here’s a screenshot of the ship:

I found another anomaly with CVE Nassau’s air groups this turn. Even though the groups max number of planes were listed as 54 on the top left, I was able to use the ‘Draw one aircraft from pool’ button to pull two more planes into each of the over-stuffed groups this turn. I then was able to get pilots for the new planes as well. That puts a total of 112 planes aboard the CVE.

The new planes are listed as damaged, we’ll see if the planes repair and become ready next turn. I’m also curious to see if the max number of planes number on the top left updates to 56 next turn.

Here’s a screen shot of the fighter group after I pulled the new planes and pilots:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/14/42

The allies got very lucky this turn in Rangoon. Last turn my intel had shown 4 AK’s at Rangoon, so I moved my Dutch sub O16 into the hex to try and get a shot off at the cargo ships. Instead I was met by 3 MSW’s and a PG. Luckily my torpedo struck home and sent MSW W.21 to the bottom and the subsequent ASW sweep failed to locate my sub.

Japan moved Tony’s into Kai Island to replace his Zeroes and my bombers paid the price as the Tony’s shredded several planes and damaged many more. My bomber group’s morale is shot for the foreseeable future.

Nemrod wrote me that his shock attack at 45,35 was inadvertent. He was trying to leave the hex and go southeast across the river hex. I carefully watched the replay and saw that only his 35th Brigade attacked. I advised him that perhaps it had moved into the hex (following some old orders he didn’t catch) while other units were leaving.

Regardless, I had been waiting for weeks for my HQ’s to march into the hex from southwest before launching an attack here. They all finally arrived this turn, so I am set for a deliberate attack next turn.

I expected such counter attack that's why I was trying to leave the hex and organize my defense on the other side of the river. The only result after three days of travel was an increase of fatigue from the 20-30 to the 50-60 ,for only 50 miles traveled , and finally this unexpected shock attack from the leading unit. I then stopped all the following units to avoid any new shock attack an ordered air strikes to give some protection while recovering. But despite disruption, fatigue , low supply and bad weather preventing any help from the air Jim's attack failed. I suppose his forces are in an even worse shape than mine.
Good news for me all in all, as it means I have enough time to take Hengshow without too much fears about my supply line from Changsa.
As for Nassau air groups problem,I have no idea.I had some problems too with my carriers airgroups during the july" upgrade", I had too put a foth airgroup (chutais size) on some carriers to keep a decent number of planes on board.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/15/42

The SS Narwhal slips into Midway harbor to lay some mines and stumbles upon a nice fat AP sitting at anchor. Torpedoes hit their mark and the dreaded “torpedo fails to detonate” message flashes by. Swarms of angry Japanese ASW assets then pound the sub hitting her twice. Damage was light.

Ok I found another anomaly with my carriers this turn. Here is a screenshot of two identical British carriers:

Image

Take a look at the air groups. The Illustrious still has its original number of aircraft as they should be with 18 fighters and 15 torpedo bombers. The Formidable however has had its air groups morph and has new air frame compliments set.

When I check the individual groups, they all have their maximum allotted aircraft, so no planes are missing according to the number on the top left of the air group pop-up window. I loaded a 1944 scenario to see if the air group compliments of Illustrious class CV’s change over time, but they still have 18 fighters and 15 bombers in that scenario (scenario #11).

I’m really starting to worry about my carriers. If air group composition is morphing on its own, who knows what I’ll end up with in a couple of months? I’ll be keeping a very close eye on what happens to my CV air groups from here on out.

Routine air missions continue as normal. No other significant air missions to report.

Well I’ve decided to send the air groups from CVE Nassau ashore and load them onto AK’s this turn. The AK’s will now unload the air groups this turn back onto the same base which will place almost all of them in a damaged state next turn. Here’s a screenshot:

Image

Once a few airframes from each group are in a ready status, I’ll fly them back aboard the CVE. Then once I’ve got the normal compliment of aircraft rebased back aboard the CVE, I’ll rail move the large remaining fragments of the groups still ashore to a base far away and send the CVE to sea to prevent any extra repaired airframes from rebasing back aboard.

Hopefully once at sea with their normal compliment of airframes, the groups will revert to their normal size and lose the 56 plane limit in the top left of the group window. If the 56 plane limit remains though, I’ll have to keep the fragments back on shore in existence instead of disbanding them into another group to prevent the groups aboard the CVE from over-filling again.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/17/42

In its first combat debut of the war, the P-38 joins in a massive air battle over Mandalay and performs well. I was also surprised at the bombardment results. I had set my bombers to 18000 feet so as not to give my shiny new P-38’s too much of an altitude disadvantage in their first combat. I had assumed the bombers wouldn’t do so well, but I was pleasantly surprised by their results.

Although Japan scored a 2-1 loss ratio in its favor (mostly shredding my obsolete planes), for the first time in the war, the allies score large numbers of Japanese planes shot down in a big battle like this.

As I wrote Nemrod, it’s good to finally be able to compete with Japan in the air war.

Allied ground losses:
2784 casualties reported

Vehicles lost 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a screenshot of the air losses display showing today’s losses:

Image

As you can see almost 25% of Japans losses were on the ground, so my air to air results weren’t as good as I first thought. 69-37 air to air kills, but only 38 of my losses were decent aircraft.

The buffaloes are junk and will be replaced as soon as I get enough air frames to upgrade them. Of course most of the allied airframe production pools are at zero so I may be using them for another year before that happens.
