New to the game

Post by ericfa2a »

Hi all !!

I have just bought the game from the matrix store and i am amazed by the ai and the overall quality of this game. I will play it for some time and i'll purchase COTA when i feel confident with HTR.

I have some questions ( and sorry for my bad english !!! ) :

1°) I dont't understand how suppression in this game works exactly. In effect, some units that fight have a lot of suppression and other no, regardless of their status (retraiting, ect ...). Is the artillery the only units that can make suppression ? Didn't a unit engaged in a fight take suppression ?

2°) When i look to an enemy unit, regardless the quality of the spotting (current and excellent reliabitlity) i can never see the level of suppression of an enemy unit. Is this a bug or a feature ? and why if it's a feature ?

3°) I am a french gamer and there is some keyboard keys that dont't run with the game. For instance, i can't tape the "-" key to see only units that haven't yet orders. Can I change the default key ?

It's all for the moment [:)].

In all case, thanks for this great game and the quality of the AI (far more superior than Combat Mission on my opinion).

Bienvenue a notre communite! You will find a number of French speakers on the forum here from France, the Low Countries, and Canada. Moi, je parle on petit peu, but I only mangle your language. :(

(1) Any unit that can place fire can cause suppression. Suppression can occur among retreating units and also in units maintaining their position.

(2) I never really noticed. There are some restrictions on what info the game gives you even with an excellent contact report. In general, if the enemy's route status is retreating or routing, then it is fair to assume that they are pretty supressed.

(3) They keboard commands are not mappable. Perhaps one of the European members will be able to tell you what key you are looking for. You might try reposting your question keyboard question on the COTA Forum.

Enjoy!

Eric,

Your English is very good. Don't be shy !

Spotted parameters of ennemy units are ussually rather poor. I usually only take combat power into account.

I have no problem with the "-" key on my Belgian keyboard. Make sure it is not the "-" on the keypad though. I don't have access to HTTR right now. If I don't forget, I'll check home tomorrow. [edit: I checked : same behaviour than for COTA : '-' works]
There used to be a French forum thread . You might find some interresting things there.

And check my website in the sig.

Salut,

JeF.

Eric,

Welcome.

Mark and JeF have beaten me to the punch on #1 and #3. In answer to #2 we don't show suppression of enemy units primarily because you have no way of knowing in RL other than by their return fire, which you can see drawn as lines emanating from the enemy unit icon to its targets.

Hi all !

Thanks for yours replies. I have now a better feeling on how suppression works.
BTW, i found the key for the "don't have orders" filter on my french keyboard : it's the INSER key !! (strange no ?!! [:)]).

After a hard first time where many things in the game were very "abstracts", i begin to understand now some mechanics and i am being very addicted to it. It's been a long time that a wargame  did catch my attention to this point.

Eric,

For more info in French on the serie, check the latest issues (and the next ones) of the follwing paper magazines :PC4WAR and Cybrestratège.
You'll find some articles on COTA. A strategy guide for HTTR was published 2 years ago in PC4WAR : you can find it by following this link.

I hope this helps,

JeF.
