The reason that your units are "auto" attacking is because it is a river crossing.....any unit that moves over a river into a hex with an enemy unit will shock attack. Hence the reason for me pulling back to the OTHER side of the river.  [:)]

eh? wtf? I already had units ACROSS that river.  The first one should shock attack (and establish a beachhead) the rest . . . well anyway.  I'm across it now, and i'm mad.

Another ghost turn as things stay quiet.  I bomb the burma rifles in the jungle and kill off 64 of them - not a bad start.  I wear down Hangchow's fortifications again this turn (I do have a rather big army there - Raver unfortunately isn't actually trying to hold the place.  He's pulling those chinese troops west in excellent order - Homan is absolutely bustling and i've got some recon going on to sort out where he's going to try and base them before the big push) and the troops will need a rest.

I take yet another empty base in the middle of nowhere.  I've had to pull some of my NLF units back to Rabaul and Kendari and Truk to rest - they've taken base after base since the war began and are almost as low as 50% in some cases.  The good news here is I've got lots of new SNLF units that have taken over garrison duties (and a lot of base forces around too - I'm certainly not short on them at this point of the game.

Operation Elation steams towards its distant target - dodging a few allied subs in the area without being detected.  This punch isn't due to land for quite a while however.

In Malaya my troops have had a two days rest, before resuming their long march - I had hoped to be in Singapore and Clark Airfield by new years (that turn was the 30th) but seems my boys will spend new years on the road.  Raver is using his Burma River defence to try and hold me up - now I understand his deployment outside of Rangoon a bit better.  I'll be bringing in some airpower to sort a bit of that out - but I've got a plan for something else in that area as well.

A minor operation - code named Rooftop kicks off this turn - if there are any results, they'll be in tomorrow.

No matter how many troops are across the river, every one that reinforces the other side has to do a shock attack.

Great to see you guys back at it!

I know Luskan regards his turn 1 as a disappointment, but he's still advancing very nicely in the SRA. Raver, I'm curious: why didn't you negotiate a house rule limiting the extent of Luskan's attacks on turn 1? E.g., limit to the historical area, or maybe Mogami's "only attack within air support" rule or something. It sorta makes me cringe to see the IJN attack Borneo and Kendari on turn 1 -- places Cap & Gown made me fight for tooth and nail in January 1942! :)

Stop me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Luskan posted the combat results for 12/28 twice -- what day are you lads up to now?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

We're up to new years eve . . .

Hi Grotius - we play the game for enjoyment, within the loose bounds of histocial plausibility.  The game itself gets us in the ballpark area of plausible/possible, and we only make house rules to limit gamieness.  We aren't after a historical simulation, we're after and enjoyable game, and the purpose of that game is to smash Raver to a pulp, repeatedly, and then scrape up his remains and feed him to stray cats.

That said if I wanted to play a historic turn 1 - I'd turn that option on [;)]

The japs achieved total surprise on turn 1 - so they should be allowed to get in their biggest sucker punch that they can.  After that, it is all downhill and going the allies way (I will always go for a better game over a more truthful simulation, which is why I play stock!).  I don't think it is fair (note - wouldn't be implausible) for me to use LBA to torp ships in Manila and Singapore harbour on turn 1, just because then Raver would have nothing to play with except APs and AKs for 6 months.  After Turn 1 is a different matter.

Lots of people playing PBEMs have very similar house rules for the same reasons.  When I play the allies, I suggest the exact same house rules and love watching the Red units steamroll the map.

Just to echo what bollock-chops has said, I hate having so many house rules that I have to stop and read the six page list to see if what I want to do will not piss-off my opponent.  So it is a case of getting slapped around for a year or so then steam-rolling my way back across the pacific to victory !

Ah another turn and another series of little dramas.

Firstly, Operation Elation has misfired.  I'm not sure how, but I have had to stick this operation on hold (this is the second operation I've started and had to pause halfway in so far this game - must be loosing my touch/nerve).  Elation will continue, but will be at least a week delayed as I obviously hadn't sorted out my supply issues properly.

Secondly, I'm pleased to announce a pair of joint operations, code named Bert & Boris.  As usual I can't really reveal much about them until after the fact (but I'm sure if Raver has a think, he knows exactly what Bert and Boris are - Elation too for that matter).

This turn had a bit more action, with my taking yet another little base or two, bombarding the crap out of Singkawang and Raver's boys out of Singapore smacking a MSW at Kuantan (damaged the AP too, but the supplies made it, and that is what matters).  I also tried a night port attack on Soerbaja but it didn't work in the slightest.

No news in Luzon or the PI or in Burma for that.

In China Raver is playing silly buggers by trying to send individual chinese units behind the front to cause havoc.  He's just getting them killed.

Enjoy.

Well yes there is also the new rule that if you do not port your ships for their upgrade you loose mucho heaps PPs.

Really? Crap - I have no idea when half of my upgrades happen.  Will have to spend some time looking into that.

Another good turn (Raver can post CR) as this turn I retake Rahaeng properly, take Moulmein (again, Raver not actually trying to hold anything here) and edge another base south along the Malayan Peninsula.

I also crossed a river in the PI and port attacked - losses were about even on both sides but still dumb.  The 10k+ troops already across the river just watched and had popcorn.  A few air battles here and there (I swear I've shot down every plane at Singapore 7 times over).

Elation is rolling along, prep work for Bert and Boris continues, I bombard the crap out of Naga again

Raver and I are really racing through the turns.

Another good turn, although Raver's nuisance tactic in China is wearing thin.  Think I might have a way to make him stop.  More details later.

I've had this crap ASW tf that has done nothing for the first month of the war (not entirely true, they've managed some good fishing and are apparently experts at card games).  I replaced the TF commander with a not so talented, but extremely aggressive young Admiral and last turn SS Sculpin took a shot at one of my transports and missed.  This turn my roving ASW TF gives her a smack.

I take Malacca this turn, which leaves Singapore, Johore Bharu and 1 other base on the Malayan continent that isn't mine.  I've got the airpower rested, and they'll beat the snot out of Singapore while my troops complete their prep work and rest up for the final assault.  Operations on Luzon have taken a different pace unfortunately, with more slow buildup required to clear the hex before Clark, then Clark, then Manila.  I'm hoping my reinforced sideshow force at Legaspi can now break through at Naga & rout the troops there.  If I've timed it right, they'll be cut off next turn by troops marching up from Lamon Bay.  That way I won't have to fight them again in the streets of Manila.

Enjoy

The important IJN upgrades happen from 3/42 to 9/42 I believe - that should upgrade most of your DDs and CVs as well as a few BBs. Not much else will matter as in '43 you will be lucky to have time to upgrade.

Another quiet turn - there will be a few of these in a row now as troops move into better positions - rest/reduce disruption etc. etc.

The only thing of note this turn is anothe rof Raver's ASW DDs got sunk by one of my subs today.  Quite frankly, Raver's ASW has been shit this game, and my sub commanders have been brilliant.

I've had 4 subs damaged (under 50 sys) and 1 sunk, for 7 DDs torpedoed, 4 of which have sunk.

A late Xmas present for Raver - tenacious Tanaka slips into Darwin and finds allied ships foolishly spread out over several 1 ship tfs.  He surprises all of them, and long lances all of them, and slips back to a waiting port to reupply his long lances.  Too easy on the whole (usualyl this game makes a japanese player cry, but now and then you just have to smile [:D]).

Another sub commander (this one already with a kill to his name) has a swing at a DMS and misses, but at this rate I'm winning the asw war around pearl.  That being said, whenever an asw tf turns up, I don't want any residual DL level on my sub so i always move them a few hexes evry time they're spotted or attacked.
