jwilkerson, done that, i removed the folder manually after the reinstall, actually reinstalled twice. Who would be the correct person to send a save game file to?

RE: no animations
That would be me - however - having experienced a pile of these types of problems in the past - I don't think sending me a save file is the fastest way to resolve.
As a next step I would suggest reinstalling ONLY the original media, no patches, no mods, no nothing else. And let's see what that does. If it fails, then please post a screen shot of the failure.
One possibility is that you have bad install media, but I can't tell that yet. So starting from the beginning and proceeding one step at a time - is what I myself would do on my box - if I had your symptoms.
Thx.

I cannot put in a clean install because we are playing a CHS game on AB's latest extended map. Theres no real screenshot of any particualr failure, its just that when i open up my turn its goes straight to PH, no games phases, no anims, no land combat, no LCU movement, no leader reassignment phase and so on

RE: no animations
Well methodical process is the way to isolate the problem.
Install one step and a time and test after each step. If there is a problem, it will appear after one of the change steps and you will have isolated the step containing the problem.
So at this point, I'd say you either have bad media, or a bad mod file or an invalid install, but I can't tell with out replicating your install process and I'd rather have you do that first, since you've been able to make it happen at least once.
You could install into a separate folder to avoid disrupting whatever is going on in the folder you don't want to mess with.

RE: no animations

Ok, run a few tests. No animations in a PBEM game but i do get everything else, eg supply status,day/night pahses, those lovely aircraft sightins and CR's and so on. i do get animations in an AI game.
One thing ive noticed is that the game does whatecer the hell it wants with the game preferences. ive noticed that despite having animations, reports etc ON when the game starts, once the game is saved and i check in the preferences and realism options both the combat reports AND animations are OFF?!?!?!?!!?!?!?
any ideas
ORIGINAL: cantona2
after a second reinstall the prefs switching has stopped but when i run Yokels turn nothign changes. When i load up the save it goes straight onto the PH hex and my turn starts. No games phases, no anims nothing
If I've followed what's happened correctly, this is the situation after the re-install. This suggests to me that there are two distinct, but possibly related problems:
1. In PBEM vs yourself combat resolution proceeds as it should, except that you get no animations.
2. In PBEM vs me, not only do you not get animations, but the whole of combat resolution is bypassed and you are dumped immediately into orders phase.
Number 2 could still be some mismatch between you and me. We can deal with that if necessary after you have been able to resolve Number 1. But best to resolve first the absence of animations in PBEM vs yourself. Then you can be confident game is running as it should on your machine, which may also cure Number 2.
Weird thing is you get animations in AI vs yourself! That implies that the code that invokes animations is working correctly. Suggests to me something is wrong in hand-off of PBEM game from one player to another - even when you're both of those players.
What Joe W says must be right: take the process methodically, one step at a time, and test with a PBEM vs yourself at each stage. Also, what Joe says about installing in a separate folder indicates that each installation is self-contained. If so, each such installation should work (or not work!) independently of any other installation on your machine. This would allow you to conserve your existing installation for our game, although I doubt you'll want to do so, given the problems you've had with it. Ultimately that's no problem; re-installing Andrew's extended map and CHS scenarios are simply part of the testing cycle. When they are working OK I can send you a fresh turn from our game if you need it.
Stick with it; we can crack this thing. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. Happy to provide any save file required, but you have 'em already.

RE: no animations
One other suggestion to help isolate the problem's source: also try a head-to-head game. Difference of behaviour between PBEM, H2H and AI games may give a clue. If you get animations in H2H and in game vs AI, but not in PBEM, look at differences between those modes of play. Most obvious difference is that in PBEM you have to load each player's turn, in other modes you do not.

This doesn't sound right. You do know that you need to open slot 1 right? It will never take you to PH, it will only show you the turn execution. If you are going to PH, then you are opening the game file and it will never show you any turn execution( or any animations ).

Hmm, not starting the turn by loading the 001 Combat Replay from the Saved Game Screen.

Oh no it isn't too simple if the Japanese player (me) has been dumb enough not to send you the slot 1 save in the 1st place!
Penny has just dropped as to how the PBEM system works and the significance of the slot 001 Combat Replay. Am deeply embarrassed for having not seen this before and for wasting people's time - my profound apologies to all concerned.

One possible continuing problem:

This was in Cantona's test PBEM against himself. If I have correctly understood way PBEM works, he ought to have had animations when he viewed first turn combat resolution by reloading the PBEM save file as Japanese player after entering orders for both sides - i.e. in role of Japanese player he should have seen animations other than via the slot 001 Combat Replay.

RE: no animations
Right, the Japanese player does not use the combat replay generated in slot 001. But, there is( or was? ) a bug with combat animations and reports when using a historical start and pbem. I am not sure what parameters cantona2 was using.
