Dual role of the Dauntless

Post by themattcurtis »

If the Dauntless is my primary scout plane, once I have fixed an enemy carrier's position, can I bolster the number of SBDs available for later strikes by turning off my rosette?

e.g., If in a scenario (this is purely hypothetical), I have two TGs in close proximity to each other, and I have multiple sightings to the point where I pretty much know where the enemy carrier force is, would it be a viable tactic -- or even an option -- to have one of those TGs click off all of its vectors so that its scouting Dauntless dive bombers could be used offensively? This shows how much of a noob I am. But I've read that most crews were crossed trained -- they could perform either role.

Thanks
Matt

Yes, I believe you are correct.

The less arrows lit up on your rosette, then the more scout planes available for strikes.

For example, if you were to play Midway "historically" as the USN, you would turn off all the search sectors for the Enterprise/Hornet group, and leave on only the Northeasterlt sectors for Yorktown to prevent an ambush, letting PBY's do most of the spotting. By 1942, the terms "Scouting Squadron" and "Bombing Squadron" were entirely notional; all dive bomber (and torpedo bomber) pilots could perform either air search or ship attack.

That is exactly what you should do if you're confident that you've got the enemy properly spotted.
