Is this game worth the $$$?

Is this game worth the $$$?
Hello,
I don't mean any disrespect to the developers with this question, but A$45 seems a little steep. The game looks like a $20 game from the screen shots. I've enjoyed Peoples Tactics over the last couple of years but I would struggle parting with the $$$ if Advanced Tactics is just a prettier version.
Don't get me wrong, I actually want to be convinced that the game is worth the money. What I liked about Peoples Tactics was that the game became engaging very quickly and was short to play. You could call it a 'lunch time game' which is what I like.
I would particularly like to hear the perspective of people who have the game and have played similar games (Peoples Tactics, TOAW, Strategic Command, Advance Wars etc).
Thanks in advance

RE: Is this game worth the $$$?
I think you should read a bit here in the forum and you´ll see the game is worth every penny !
Most guy´s here think it´s too cheap [:D]
Please read here and forget the 20$ screenshots. The graphics you can replace completely when you don´t
like them. The game engine is the interesting thing and the ability to edit nearly everything.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I just read the review at 'Out of Eight' and that has favourable comparisons to TOAW (personally I find TOAW a little too complex for my liking).
So for you, Seille, the ability to edit the game is the big plus? Is this difficult or can random games be setup quickly with limited tech and limited available units for example?
Also, is this a game that can be played quickly?

RE: Is this game worth the $$$?
It is a big plus since i know many scenarios will come made by guy´s like Tweber.
Or graphic mods which are already in work and looking great.
That´s why i think the flexibility to edit anything is great. This game is more a wargame construction set.
One guy makes a scenario of the napoleonic time an other makes a starship troopers scenario.
And the ww2 setup delivered with the game is imho very good.
Is the game played quickly ? Depends on the scenario. You can setup random games with few towns and you´ll need minutes for a turn.
For my Russia 1941 turns i need up to 30 minutes with my russians since there is a lot to plan and prepare.
Many guy´s here say alone the random game generator is worth the money since you can play and play and play......
My advice again. READ that forum. It´s a lot of stuff, but after that you´ll buy the game believe me [;)]

I've been meaning to write my own review on the game, and title it "Advanced Tactics: A Competitor's Review". However, I've been too busy playing the game to get around to writing the review. If that's not high praise, I don't know what is.
I meant researching it, not playing it...yeah, that's it...[:D]

I've played CEAW & SC2/WaW, and am still playing TOAW - this game won't replace TOAW for me, but CEAW and SC2 have gone from my hard drive......probably for good & I can see that this system might well give a better strat level WW2 game than either of those dedicated systems can do...which is pretty damning on those games IMO.

Glad to hear you like Advance wars, for the GBA or for the NDS, it's almost the same, I love it, and you'll love advanced Tactics too.
AT has the simplicity of Advance Wars but it also has a very deep tactic and strategic aspect. Just give it a try.

Dude, this thread almost borders on trolling.[:)]
Not one person here has said anything bad about this game, in any topic.
So how many games can YOU think of, regardless of cost, where that has been the case.
You'll answer your own question.

My whole thing about this game is that PT was a FREE game, a lot of time and effort went into it and I applaud Vic for doing that. Now that he has upgraded the game quite a bit and is charging for it...hey, he loves doing this and we love playing it and it's guys like Vic that I admire for taking hundreds of hours of their free time creating games for us. So, if it's something I enjoy I'm more than happy to pay my money, as I've done for Team Fortress 2, Dominions 3, etc.

Yes I have - I've said elsewhere it is way too generic to be a true great game.

ok, too addictive
too much fun for one person
not a great solo game
low resolution maps
simple scenarios need upgrading to a high grog factor, not a bad thing just a tweekingthing

This game is extremely well crafted, everything fits and work just as you feel it should. It won't leave you wanting.

RE: Is this game worth the $$$?
The answer is YES!
This game is definitely worth the money. Don't be fooled by the graphics. As a matter of fact, I kind of like the graphics. My biggest fear is that Victor will get infected with the same virus that got hold of Hubert Cater when it came time for him to develop Strategic Command 2 and he will replace hexes with squares and counters with stupid little toy soldiers. What the hell was he thinking?
I've played quite a bit of SC1 and some of SC2. Now, I'm in playing the AT European war scenario PBEM, and I actually like the feel of it more than either SC1 or SC2.
My prediction is that this game is going to be so popular, that the number of user created scenarios is going to explode in the near future, which is just going to make the game more and more valuable.

RE: Is this game worth the $$$?
I am a lurker at this site from years back and rarely offer my two bits. In this case, as an original TOAW Vol. 1 player up to TOAW III and a recent owner of CEAW, I have to add that AT is worth the money. The graphics originally made me hesitate, but there is enormous potential for growth and flexibility in this system. As stated by others here, this game is absorbing enough to get in the way of life with the standard "okay...this absolutely has to be the last turn" syndrome.
RE: Is this game worth the $$$?
I'll jump in as well, have numerous operational games, including 3 versions of TOAW (including TOAWIII).
Initially the graphics made me think twice on this game. I'm glad I didnt wait any longer though. It's actually very good. The editor looks like it has LOTS of flexibilty so I'm hoping to see a significant user commnunity making scenarios.
And on the graphics, the more I play it, the more I actually like the graphics, they seem to fit the game.
I had planned to quickly install some unit or terrain mods, but as I've played more with these graphics, I'm having second thougth, I'll probably end up using both (thanks to the architecture of using "master files").
