Hmmm, interesting. I was hoping to be able to interdict allied shipping trying to exit the map, which brings a follow up question to mind;

Can you send shipping back to Pearl or Japan from any base?

If yes, it seems like a way to "exploit" the game system.

On another note the screenshots look great! :) Are you adding the starbursts and tags or this some sort of built-in game AAR functionality(like a VCR replay type thingy)?

Back to Japan from any TF position?

No, they just seem to disappear. They have to be out a TF before they can be sent. They don't seem to require any escort.

Likewise, when the come back they just reappear in port.
Can they be sent back from any position? If so, could you have saved Kongo by sending it back from just outside Lunga instead of trying to get to Truk first?

Wow, that is my wargaming dream realized, I guess I know what I will be playing the rest of the decade! Take as long as you guys need to get it right. I know you will be getting much feedback from the community after UV is out but from you AAR's the system seems both fun, historical and very replayable.

As the US player you have to get them back to Noumea and as Jap you have to get to Truk before you can send them off.

Just a quick reaction to the War in the Pacific map:

Why does Australia look like it has huge expanses of forest? The ones in the centre and west of the continent look completely out of place. Most of Australia, especially these areas, are semi desert or desert. I think that parts of India, near the present day Pakistani border, are also quite arid but this isn't shown either.

Is this because there is no 'desert' terrain type? Or is it because of innacuracies in terrain placement on the map?

The mountains in Australia look to be a bit misplaced as well. The highest mountains in Australia, in the very south-east corner of the mainland, look to be entirely absent.

Just my observations...

Thanks, we'll definitely take a look at those points.

There is a desert (or arid) terrain type. It's not really painted in well on this version of the map. As I said, it's quite an old version.

Before anyone else gets too bent out of shape, note for instance the Rockies have not yet come into existence and the arctic ocean appears to be ice free! It also been pointed out that Java and Sumatra are joined by a land bridge which doesn't exist (at least in this epoch).

The final map will obviously be an abstraction - rather than a realistic mapping of actual terrain features, but feedback about general geography is welcome, especially since most of the map concerns geography that I have not first hand experience of.

Just to offer you a little visual help in the terrain of the region, I have attached a portion of one of my wallpapers covering that area. Gives a fairly good idea of what the terrain is. I did scale it down to SVGA. :p

For those curious on where I got these, here is the site where you can get the originals (tiff & jpg) of various sizes/resolutions:
The Blue Marble

My ultimate aim it to get the full resolution (43200x21600) but, due to heavy demand I will have to wait. I have no need for it (just would like to have it --- I want it! I want it! I want it!). :D :D :D

Pacwar map inaccuracy?

Post by Slaughtermeyer »

In Pacwar, Guadalcanal is closer to Rabaul than Port Moresby, whereas in War in the South Pacific and UV, Port Moresby is closer. Which is the closest to Rabaul in real life? The satellite map seems to show that Port Moresby is closer.
