I did a lot of VB programing as a hobby. But that VB2-6. Looks like its much more for prime time now.

Yeah the whole .NET package screams for hobby programming of wargames. I've just started with C# in a new job and will spend some freetime try to make something, just for fun.

I think I have to whole-heartedly disagree. The appearance of simplicity is exactly what gave Windows its bad rep in the first place. However simpler .NET may be all it will likely serve the hobby segment with is an even greater number of easily coded but poor in every other aspect wargames. Awful User Interfaces, Brain Dead AIs, and so on.

The simple fact is most hobbyist programmers do not use, need, focus on, or otherwise develop those skills even for their day jobs so they are a natural afterthought for their own nightly endeavors.

The problems only begin there. Add to that a perceived self-sufficiency and now hobbyist .NET programmers do not want to work together like is so common in the java world. I guess we are all experts at everything right? [:D]

For my part, Microsoft recently gave me a release copy of Visual Studio 2008. I wouldn't dream of coding in anything other than C# .NET and have been for some time now. I'm working on my own game, by myself, because I like everyone am an expert at all things... [:D]

Well, AGEOD.s games are made in Delphi, Delphi is sort of the grand daddy to C# ;).

I wouldn't code in anything but C# either, except for Office stuff perhaps (then I use VB).

Right traditional VB and even C++ are being squeezed out by higher and lower level languages. There really is no place left for either anymore. VB.NET is a different animal. Like you said VB.NET and C# are basically the same. Only the syntax is different the resulting metacode is the same. VB.NET was created to get VB programmers to use .NET by accomodating the familiar syntax. For that reason though its use is only going to diminish over time. C# is the favored language for .NET and as such will continue, ever increasingly, to be the one new recruits learn and use and so on. So with an eye to the future C# is a far far better choice. Not to say there is anything wrong in coding in VB.NET though should your VB skills be stronger.

Actually my VB skills were/are stronger than my C skills but I still chose C# anyway. I really wish I could make a stronger case for one versus the other but in the case of .NET thats one of its beauties. The languages are all interchangeable. Its one way in which Microsoft has been quite ingenious and a good reason why I am not so quick to bash MS. The whole .NET thing is widely thought to be an impecably strong piece of work.

As a whole I find forum users to be quite negative regarding works in progress (just check out the MNB, WIF, or original EIA forums if you doubt that), so I don't talk about it much anymore. I did recently post a little about it over in a general forums thread if your interested..

You will always get negative feedback on an un-finished project. That's a given. That's no reason to discount the recourses available in these forums. Beta testers routinely find their way on to teams via forums.

I wasn't refering to beta testers. Beta testers fall into pretty much three categories for me. Those that are just happy to be playing any version of the game and give lots of useful feedback, those that still dont actually get that part of beta testing is having the game blow up on you (and your not suppose to start thinking negatively about that), and those that pretty much promise you the world but do nothing at all for you. I was actually refering to normal forum users and I believe Matrix has learned the same leason and this is one reason why we don't see many game forums popup anymore for matrix games that have just started but rather for ones that are nearer to completion. Regular forum users who don't get enough info or updates or feel too much time has past are down right cruel and mean. Visit any of the three references for examples. In reference to my project specifically at this point I'd only really be interested in someone who has exposure to some similiar games and can articulate well opinions on strengths and weakenesses or that sort of thing. Free artistic help never hurts either but like anything else doesn't exist in any quality form that I've ever found.
