VICTORY AT SEA: CHS 158;sjohnson(J)vs Spruance(A)

Post by racndoc »

I got a little nostalgic thinking that this would be the last regular WitP game that I would start before the Admirals Edition arrives this summer....so I decided to name the AAR after the classic 1950's WWII series on NBC.

Steve(sjohnson) and I will be playing CHS SCN 158....the NIK mod CHS. I tried it a couple of times before(I think it was NikMod 5.x or something and flak was overpowered but now it is 9.1 and my opponent thought that the flak was fine after he playtested it) and of course A2A and CV vs CV combat is pretty cool in the Nik Mod so Im excited.

Here are the settings:

2 Day turns
Non historical 1st turn
Surprise... on
PDU..........on
Adv Weather...0n
Damage Control..on
Auto sub ops...off
sub doctrines...off
replacements...off
non variable reinforcements

HOUSE RULES:

1)Use common sense(the most important one)
2)Train pilots by attacking real targets...no attacking abandoned bases or supply training
3)Use PPs on Kwangtung unts that are moved out of Manchuria
4)LCU stacking: 30,000 defenders on an atoll and 75,000 max on one hex island
5)No invasions by subs
6)ASW TF max of 6 ships
7)AC stacking: 50x base size
8)AC that transfer greater than 9 hexes must rest one turn before conducting any air operations
9)No naval bombing with B-29s
10) 4E city bombing attacks above 15,000 feet during the day
11)Invasions and paratroop landings only at base/dot hexes
12)No cutting(resetting) land movement of land stacks with small units or fragments of units
13) No city bombing attacks from or against Chinese bases

Admiral Kimmel surveys the damage at the end of the day and is amazed that after all the 800 kg bombs and torpedoes that were landed only one battleship was sunk in the attack......BB West Virginia suffered 10 bomb hits and 3 torpedoes but quick actions by the XO allowed them to counterflood in time and the Wee Vee settled slowly onto the muddy bottom of Pearl.....even she will be refloated over time and sent to Bremerton for major repairs and a refit so not one BB was permanently lost to the USN.

Grim news arrives from Wake Island.....the Marines are overrun in maasive attack by the South Seas detachment with gunfire support by BB Yamashiro and BB Fuso.

COMMENTS:

CV Shokaku and CV Zuikaku were positively identified by the Dutch sub SS-019 today in the South China Sea just off the coast of Kuching.

This means that the Pearl Harbor strike force included 4 CVs, 1 CVL and 2 CVEs and at least one fighter daitai was swapped out for Kates.

62 Kates and 25 Vals were lost in the attacks on Oahu.

Overall today, Japan destroys 248 Allied AC vs her own losses of 123 AC in air attacks at Pearl, Clark Field, Manila and Singapore.

You can tell that the Pearl Harbor strike was a bit light on Vals as only 73% runway and 42% service damage was inflicted on Oahu.....normally in CHS its more like 90% plus on both runways and service facilities after 2 strikes by 150 Vals and in CHS the Oahu airfields repair very slowly.....engineer units are rushed from Alaska, Seattle and Los Angeles to Oahu to repair the damage to the airfields. Over 200 AC are loaded in transports on the US west coast today for delivery to the Hawaiian Islands.

DECEMBER 7TH-8TH, 1942(1ST TURN)

DEI:

In the only good news of the day for the Allies, SS-019 puts a torpedo in CV Shokaku:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 29,54

Japanese Ships
CV Shokaku, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Akigumo
CL Abukuma

Allied Ships
SS O19, hits 2

The torpedo penetrated and caused significant damage so hopefully the fire and flotation damage will cause the systems damage to increase before CV Shokaku can effect repairs.

CV Shokaku and CV Zuikaku avenge this sub attack with an overwhelming strike on BC Repulse:

Day Air attack on TF at 23,58

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
D3A2 Val x 29
B5N2 Kate x 29

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A2 Val: 5 damaged
B5N2 Kate: 10 damaged

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Bomb hits 9, Torpedo hits 6, on fire, heavy damage

BC Repulse quickly sinks.

The Allies launch a nice counterstrike against the IJN CVs but no hits are landed:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 25,55

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 22

Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 8
Buffalo I x 24
Blenheim IV x 12

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 2 destroyed, 4 damaged
Buffalo I: 5 destroyed, 5 damaged
Blenheim IV: 6 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima
CV Shokaku, on fire
CV Zuikaku

Japan lands at Kuching, Tarakan and Sandakan on Borneo.

IJA troops also storm ashore at Manado and Tomin in the Celebes.

On New Guinea, Japan invades at Morotai, Sorong, and Wewak.

Steve sends BB Kongo and BB Haruna to block the narrow northern entrance to the Makassa Straits and CL Boise runs right into them while attempting to escape to Balikpappan:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat at 34,63

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo, Shell hits 2
BB Haruna, Shell hits 1
DD Murasame, Shell hits 1
DD Harusame, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Yudachi, Shell hits 2
DD Samidare

Allied Ships
CL Boise, Shell hits 10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat at 34,63

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
SOC-3 Seagull: 2 destroyed

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo
BB Haruna, Shell hits 6
DD Murasame
DD Harusame, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Yudachi, on fire
DD Samidare

Allied Ships
CL Boise, Shell hits 9, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

IJN bombardment TFs hit Allied shipping in port all across the DEI.

COMMENTS:

CV Shokaku and Zuikaku were evidently tasked with the destruction of BC Repulse, BB PoW, and support of the landings on Kuching. Now with Shokaku damaged, will she need to make port for repairs and if so can CV Zuikaku continue her mission alone. There are NO other CVs around fo a good 4000 miles.

BB PoW, still in port at Singapore, can escape to the north through the Malacca Strait or try to sail past the 2 IJN CVs to escape to the south....with good weather over SE Asia and thunderstorms over the DEI, BB PoW is ordered to escape to the south through the Java Sea under LRCAP from Demons and Brewsters.

BB Haruna and Kongo not only sank CL Boise in the Makassar Strait but they are escorting a large assault TF evidently heading for Balikpappan and will probably land tomorrow.

Manado and Tarakan will fall tomorrow and will immediately become Val/Kate bases,. I have yet to move any of the shipping in the PI but there will be no escape to the south.

Tomorrow, Kuching will be captured and Nells/Bettys will be staged in immediately so there will be no naval movement possible in the south China Sea or the Java Sea...resupply of Singapore will be impossible. Palembang and Batavia will need to be evacuated on my first(current) move.

Balikpappan will be invaded tomorrow so Soerabaja will require naval evacuation as well. The PoW battlegroup and the Dutch and USN cruisers will be ordered to rally at Kendari and Amboina. Fuel will be stockpiled at Koepang for the next line of defense.

The key to my DEI strategy is Soerabaja...virtually all my Java troops will mass there and entrench and I need to get 20,000 supply there ASAP so the LCUs can take on replacements and the air units can upgrade and rebuild. The 4 B-17 groups in the Philippines will be withdrawn to Soerabaja where 2 groups will converted to LB-30s and the other 2 groups will receive max TOE. With Japan's rapid advance I think that I will be a day late and a dollar short on Java but I have to try anyways. Supplies are gathered at Kendari, Makassar and Balikpappan and sent to Soerabaja. Dutch battalions at Bandjermasin, Lombok, Makassar and Kendari are loaded on AKs/APs to reinforce Soerabaja. With Nells/Bettys operating out of Balikpappan in a couple of days the fighters to cover the Soerabaja resupply/reinforcement operations will need to come from the P-40s in the Philippines....but there are only so many PPs.

On Sumatra, I will attempt to reinforce Palembang with as many troops and engineers as possible. Id like to get more entrenched there and have as many engineers as I can to cause major damage to the oil facilities in a prolonged struggle there. In CHS almost half of the oil points available to Japan....1200....are located at Palembang. Zuid Regiment will march overland from the west coast while the 3 north Sumatra battalions and some base engineers will mass at Bangka where they will be shipped/airlifted to Palembang. Losses of men, materiel and shipping will be heavy here but are unavoidable.

DECEMBER 7TH-8TH, 1941(1ST TURN)

SOUTH PACIFIC:

Tarawa is captured and Guam, Rabaul and Nauru are invaded.

MALAYA:

Things are strangely quiet here other than the capture of Tavoy with paratrooers.

No sign of the 5th or 18th Divisions and no amphibious assaults on the east coast of Malaya. Recon shows 7 units at Singora so maybe those 2 divisions were landed thewre to reduce disruption.

Still, there is no attempt made on Khota Bharu and this will take some pressure off of Singapore. I may try to fly 4E bombers into Singapore eventually to close the airfield at Kuching....that would open up the entire are for resupply and troop movements.

Philippines:

The main Japanese landing goes down at Lingayen but other invasions occur at Jolo, Vigan, Tuegagaro and Davao. Paratroopers capture Naga and reinforcements immediately come ashore.

COMMENTS:

Im going to reinforce Lingayen with everything I can spare to slow the Japanese advance on Luzon. With the Japanese airfields at Jolo, Tarakan and Manado preventing escape to the south Im going to try to evacuate the PI shipping to the north around the northern tip of Luzon and thence to SF or Midway. Its pretty much a suicidal trip for all the combatant ships anyway so the DDs, PGs, and PCs at Manila will be ordered to attack Japanese transports at all the landing sites on Luzon and take as many Japs with them as they can.

DECEMBER 9TH-10TH, 1941

DEI:

16 Vildebeests, 3 Swordfish and 5 Brewsters are staged into Singkawang and make a coodinated attack on CV Shokaku:

Day Air attack on TF, near Kuching at 27,56

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 12

Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 3
Brewster 339D x 5
Vildebeest IV x 16

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 3 damaged
Brewster 339D: 1 damaged
Vildebeest IV: 2 destroyed, 12 damaged

Japanese Ships
CV Shokaku, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CV Zuikaku
BB Kirishima

This second torpedo hit also penetrates and causes extensive damage.....hopefully the fire and flotation damage wil create additional system damage and force Shokaku into port. The IJN carrier strike package in the South China Sea appears to be reduced this turn so perhaps CV Shokaku is incapable of flight operations:

Day Air attack on TF at 25,54

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 14
D3A2 Val x 9
B5N2 Kate x 14

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
TK British Lord, Bomb hits 7, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Japan captures Kuching today so the entire South China Sea will be covered by Bettys/Nells tomorrow.

Japan also overruns Tarakan, Manado and Sandakan and completes the isolation of the PI to the south.

Over in New Guinea, Sorong and Morotai are captured.

As anticipated, Balikpappan was invaded today under BB escort. Balikpappan will be captured tomorrow and then Bettys/Nells will be immediately staged in.

In the most significant surface action of the war to date, Japan's attempt to capture Kendari in a coup de main was repulsed by Admiral Doorman's cruiser force:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 33,71

DD Ootori
DD Hayabusa, Shell hits 1
AP Hikawa Maru, Shell hits 2
AP Yamato Maru, Shell hits 4, on fire
AP Shoka Maru, Shell hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
AK Noto Maru

Allied Ships
CL De Ruyter, Shell hits 2
CL Tromp
DD Edsall
DD John D. Edwards
DD Whipple

Japanese ground losses:
357 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Time Surface Combat, near Kendari at 33,71

DD Hayabusa, Shell hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
AP Hikawa Maru
AP Yamato Maru, on fire
AP Shoka Maru, on fire, heavy damage
AK Noto Maru, Shell hits 2

Allied Ships
CL De Ruyter
CL Tromp, Shell hits 4
DD Edsall, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD John D. Edwards, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Whipple, Shell hits 3, on fire

Japanese ground losses:
486 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

The Japanese troop transports are forced to withdraw to the west of Kendari. Japan tried to move their most forward Betty/Nell base over 500 miles farther into the DEI but the Dutch cruisers push their timetable back by at least 4-6 days. There are no close by IJN surface ships to assist this assault TF so it will stand aside tomorrow...CL Sumatra is ordered to pursue them.

Steve has been pushing forward on all fronts with Japan with small TFs.....many not covered by surface ships. He tries to capture forward level 4 airfields for his Bettys/Nells and advance assault transports under their cover without adequate surface ship escort as he doesnt want to risk his CAs/BBs to Allied bombers. Hopefully this attack forces him to make fewer amphibious assaults with more surface escorts...in effect slowing Japan down and allowing the Allies to damage more capital ships(cant wait till I get the A-24s..lol)

If Kendari had been invaded today I would have been forced to pull back entirely from the DEI....Amboina and Koepang would have been abandoned. Now the Allies can stay in thge southern DEI for a few more days...hopefully until Soerabaja has been adequately reinforced/resupplied.

Soerabaja currently has 11,000 supply with 9000 supply in AKs approaching which will offload there tomorrow along with multiple Dutch LCUs. Tomorrow will be a critical day in the early war for the Allies...if we can mass 20,000 supply in Soerabaja tomorow the 4Es and all the Dutch AC can take on replacements. All available Dutch fighters are placed on CAP over Soerabaja and we begin to stage P-40s out of the Philippines to Java by way of Samarinda.

Meanwhile, 3 IJN assault TFs make their SW from the Makassar Straits threatening Makassar, Bandjermasin and Bali.

Aye wneumann. Im really enjoying the CHS NikMod. Feel free to post here about how the actions in your game are paralleling the results here.

DECEMBER 11TH-12TH, 1941

The pace of Japanese operations already appears to be slowing down a bit.

CHINA:

Japan attacks at Hong Kong but is easily repulsed.

Ive gone on the offensive a bit here. Ive got about 7 corps on the move to Ichang and another 3 corps to cut the Ichang-Hankow road. A further 3 Chinese corps are advancing on Hangkow.

MALAYA:

Very quiet here....still no amphibious invasions or an advance from Singora....the 30,000 troops at Singora seem content to sit there. No sign either of the 5th or 18th Division. Im almost womdering if Steve intended to make a major invasion at Mersing covered by CV Shokaku and CV Zuikaku but had to cancel due to the damage CV Shokaku has suffered.

PHILIPPINES:

Japan launches a major assault at Lingayen but is thrown back by the reinforced American/Philippino garrison:

Ground combat at Lingayen

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 27683 troops, 155 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 679

Defending force 16217 troops, 95 guns, 125 vehicles, Assault Value =
446

Japanese max assault: 602 - adjusted assault: 152

Allied max defense: 469 - adjusted defense: 501

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese ground losses:
1025 casualties reported
Guns lost 10

Allied ground losses:
343 casualties reported
Guns lost 12
Vehicles lost 1

The heroic remnants of the USN Asiatic Fleet continue their attempts to repel the invaders until the very end:

Im trying to send a message here that Japan better cover her invasions with at least CLs or better or they will be intercepted by every ship in the Allied arsenal.

DEI:

CL Sumatra pursues the Kendari invasion force, breaks it up, and causes the assault troops to be dropped off at Pomala:

Night Time Surface Combat at 32,71

DD Ootori, Shell hits 6, on fire
DD Hayabusa, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP Hikawa Maru
AP Yamato Maru, on fire
AP Shoka Maru, on fire, heavy damage
AK Noto Maru

Allied Ships
CL Sumatra, Shell hits 2
DD Whipple, Shell hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
114 casualties reported

The IJN transports, after retreating to Pomala, continue to be hit by Allied naval bombers:

Day Air attack on TF, near Pomala at 33,70

Allied aircraft
Martin 139 x 3

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AP Hikawa Maru, Bomb hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
14 casualties reported

The Kendari invasion force has been broken up and disorganized. Japan will now need to bring additional troops from Tarakan or Manado to take Kendari.

T.IVa bombers put a torpedo into CA Myoko and sink a DE off Kendari:

Day Air attack on TF, near Pomala at 33,70

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 4
T.IVa x 7

Allied aircraft losses
T.IVa: 7 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Myoko, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Day Air attack on TF at 28,66

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 4
T.IVa x 3

Allied aircraft losses
T.IVa: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
DE Patrol Boat No. 46, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

CL DeRuyter and CL Tromp block the passage from Manado to Amboina to defend against an invasion from the north.

Balikpappan and Wewak are captured. Now Bettys/Nells can cover all the appoaches to Soerabaja. The harbor is cleared there save for MSWs trying to clear the mines that were laid in the port and the AKs that are unloading their precious supply cargoes.

The Allied effort to reinforce Palembang continues but massed subs and the Kuching based Nells/Bettys are exacting a heavy toll.

Soerabaja now has 19,200 supply with another 2000 supply still to unload. P-40s from the Philippines and help to provide CAP over Soerabaja.
Hopefully, if Soerabaja can reach 20,000 supply tomorrow I can rebuild my 4 B-17 groups and also the Dutch airforce.

Adm Spruance,

CHS scenario 158 not bad playing at all. We're now in Oct '42 (a bit ahead of you). Unfortunately playing the Allies so saying too much would be at the risk of yielding "intelligence", though I will watch your PBEM and "generically" comment as appropriate. In any event I'd be of little or no help to you with playing the Japanese side.

Bombs away on CV Shokaku

Post by racndoc »

DECEMBER 15TH-16TH, 1941

DEI:

Lots of action in the DEI this turn as massed Allied bombers hit CV Shokaku and a major naval battle occurs at Kendari.

Recon identified CV Shokaku in port at Kuching trying to effect repairs. From airfields at Singapore, Borneo and Singkawang virtually the entire RAF and some Dutch and AVG fighters attempted to finish off CV Shokaku in port:

Day Air attack on Kuching , at 27,56

Japanese aircraft

At least a dozen of the 17 bombs that hit Shokaku were 500 lbs but there was not even one bomb that penetrated the flight deck or caused much damage beyond scorching the paint. Good thing that the USN CVs werent at 4 hex range at RL Midway or we might have lost the war ....sigh....

Japan captures Weda and Bandjermasin.

A large invasion force is spotted sailing north in the java Sea....will probably land at Kragen tomorrow.

Invasions occur at Aitape, WKendari and Waigeo.

The IJA forces are still stalemated at Lingayen.

DD Thanet was heavily damaged in action off Luzon and was attempting to escape across the Philippine Sea towards Midway when she ran smack into a huge IJN tanker force in a mid ocean intercept:

Hmmm...I wonder where they are heading....

Unbelieveably on the following night, PG Asheville, also trying to make good her escape from the PI ran into the same tanker TF:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat at 57,56

Japanese Ships

TK Kyoko Maru
TK Kyuei Maru
TK Manei Maru, Shell hits 1, on fire
TK Manju Maru
TK Nichirin Maru
TK Terukawa Maru

Allied Ships
PG Asheville, Shell hits 31, and is sunk

After plotting their positions on consecutive nights it appears that the tanker TF is moving SW towards the DEI.....this massive fuel transport is obviously meant to cover the next phase of Japanese operations after the DEI has been taken...northern Australia or India????

CBI:

Japan attacks the 3 Chinese corps at Hangchow and forces them to retreat.

Over a dozen Chinese corps mass for an assault on Nanchang.

Japanese paratroops take Victoria Point.

Still no Japanese activity in Burma.

INVASION OF JAVA

Post by racndoc »

DECEMBER 17TH-18TH, 1941

DEI:

Most of the action again happens in the DEI which seems to be the usual occurrence in this game.

Japan invades at Kragen in strength and drops paratroopers at Tjiatjap and Djojakarta. By the end of the first day of the Java invasion, 64,000 troops are ashore at Kragen. The paratroops capture Djojakarta but are repulsed at Tjilatjap.

Elsewhere in the DEI, Japan captures Kendari, Aitape and Waigeo.

Hollandia is also invaded.

COMMENTS:

Its obvious now why Steve hasnt attacked down the Malay peninsula yet...he is making the major thrust in the central DEI with the bulk of the SAA. With 64,000 troops on shore at Kragen(and more arriving each day), 40,000 troops at Bandjermasin, 18 LCUs at Balikpappan, 60,000 to
70,000 troops at Lingayen(2 divisions, one brigade and a naval guard), a division at Naga, there was no one left for Malaya save the 65,000 troops watching from Singora. He wants to take Soerabaja and then roll up Java south to north, cross over to Sumatra and roll it up south to north.

I personally think its a mistake for Japan to ignore Malaya and especially ignoring Singapore but unless I mass B-17s there and make them pay for it then Japan gets off pretty cheaply. Still, everything in Malaya is entrenching and taking on replacements and prepping for Singapore so it will be no easy feat to take come February, 1942.

In regards to the southern DEI, the fall of Kendari today and the appearance tomorrow of Bettys/Nells compels the Allies to withdraw entirely from the southern DEI and fall back on northern Australia. Fuel is in transit to Broome and Darwin to provide a rally point for my surface TFs....from here the ABDA navies will need to fall back on Perth once Japan captures Koepang. Soerabaja harbor is ordered cleared and all the shipping there(much of it standing by to ship the Barisan Regiment and the Bali Detachment back to Java once the PPs were avaiable) will attempt to escape to the Indian Ocean.

The mainland USA B-17s just reached Darwin, Australia today and as I feared they were a day late and a dollar short. Closing down Balikpappan airfield is of little use now with 64,000 IJA troops already on the ground in Java.... Japan has enough troops in place to roll up Soerabaja. Normally by withdrawing Dutch LCUs from around the DEI and taking on replacements I can get 1100 AV in Soerabaja by the end of January 1942 behind level 6 forts. Currently the AV is only 411 and Japan can steamroll them with the troops already ashore. In fact it makes no sense to spend PPs to reinforce Java...the units will just be destroyed in situ and makes it easier for Japan to overrun the rest of the DEI. And moving the 4Es to Java merely places them at risk...Japan is dropping paratroopers on several of my airstrips there already. It would probably make the most sense to stage all the Australian based B-17s to Malaya and and wreak havoc on Japans SE Asia airfields but then there is the risk that they would be marooned there once Java and Sumatra are overrun.

Things didnt look so grim 2 turns ago....Im a bit surprised at how rapidly the strategic situation has deteriorated in the DEI.

68 Allied AC are destroyed today vs 33 Japanese including 23 P-40Es, 16 Brewsters, 9 P-40Bs and 9 Demons. Almost one third of Allied fighter stregnth in Java is lost in 2 days for minimal gain.

As part of Japan's counterair effort, Soerabaja is hit by a naval bombardment and paratroopers are dropped at Malang in an effort to take out the Allied torpedo bombers there. Fortunately, the Dutch Marines arrived at Malang just in time and easily repulsed the paratroops....forcing them to retreat into a roadless rough terrain hex.

The one bright note of the day for the Allies on Java....the Mobiele Eenheid Armored unit arrived at Kragen just as Japan was commencing its assault there....for whatever reason only a small IJA force attacked and was defeated by the Dutch armor. The Mobiele Eenheid Armored unit will withdraw to Madioen tomorrow but at least it delayed the Japanese by a couple of days.

Java has become way too hot for USAAF 4E bombers to be stationed there....the 4 Philippine 4E groups are staged to Malaya....they will be used in conjuction with the RAF to close Singora airfield in a couple days and allow supply transports currently sitting in the Andaman Sea to drop there cargoes in Malaya.

SOUTHERN DEI:

Nells/Bettys stage into Kendari today and immediately sink CL Dragon and DD Van Ghent which were damaged in the Naval Battle of Kendari a couple of days ago.

Samarinda, Pomola and Hollandia are captured.

An IJN Bombardment TF with BB Nagato and BB Hyuga patrols the waters off Koepang....evidently to prevent any Allied ground reinforcement effort as invasion transports load at Kendari:

Admiral Paliser's Surface TF built around BB PoW and BB Renown arrives in Broome and refuels.

Im trying to put a plan together.....OPERATION BACK HAND BLOW....to hit the IJN Bombardment TF and invasion TFs at Kendari in a couple days. The USAAF 4E groups from the US mainland that arrived in Darwin yesterday disperse to Derby and Wyndham to take on replacements and 2 groups swap out to LB-30s. These groups will be staged in to Koepang in 2 days to hit the Kendari airfield. With Kendari closed, RN and Dutch surface TFs can sortie to Koepang and intercept the IJN fleets.

Meanwhile, Dutch T.IVs are staged into Koepang to try to land a torpedo or 2 on the IJN BBs. Brewsters and P-40s are also staged in to provide LRCAP for the Allied surface TFs that will be fighting at Koepang.

PHILIPPINES:

Tawi Tawi falls to Japan by osmosis and the Allies withdraw from Lingayen to Clark.

50 Allied AC are destroyed today....45 on the ground....but the bulk of the Dutch air force and the USAAF P-40s lie damaged on the ruined airfields and are unable to fly.

Its impossible now to commit the B17s to Koepang to level the Japanese Betty base at Kendari.....the B-17s are instead staged to Malaya to support a major counterair operation there that will go off in a couple of days.

A large IJN invasion force is spotted approaching Koepang from the north. Even though the 4E bombers werent able to close the Betty base at Kendari, the BB PoW battlrgroup at Broome is ordered north to Koepang at full speed to hit the IJN bombardment force and break up the invasion. The weather has forecasted thunderstorms and even though heavily attrited by naval bombardment the remaining P-40s and Brewsters that are able to still fly at Koepang will provide LRCAP.

Japan captures Kragen on Java. The Dutch/American air force in the DEI is virtually destroyed over a 4 day period. For the remaining Allied AC there its "every man for himself"....all remaining AC able to fly will be withdrawn.

The fate of Java is sealed.

PHILIPPINES:

Japan captures San Fernando and Lamon Bay.

B-17s MAKE THE PAYBACK IN MALAYA

Post by racndoc »

DECEMBER 23RD-24TH, 1941

DEI:

Guess I dont quite understand how the naval bombardment routine works with 2 day turns. The BB PoW bombardment Tf had 2 days to travel the 12 hexes from Broome to Koepang....instead she moved only 8 hexes over 4 movement phases at max speed and now stands off still 4 hexes from her objective. So the Japanese invasion force is now ashore on Koepang....the situation is hopeless for the defenders there....and even worse the PoW TF was spotted and now it appears as if Steve has more than 2 BBs patroling the hex. Operation Backhand Blow is reluctantly cancelled and the RN BBs are sent back to Broome.

Japan continues to destroy Allied AC on the ground with multiple naval bombardments of Koepang and Soerabaja and even Malang. The shattered Dutch and USAAF air groups continue to withdraw from the DEI.

ABDA naval forces are now forced to withdraw from Broome as Koepang will be operational with Bettys shortly and they fall back to Exmouth.

Japan captures Madioen, Manokwari and Dagua.

PHILIPPINES:

Japan forces 2 Phiippino divisions out of Lucena and overruns deserted Lingayen as the noose tightens on Clark and Manila:

JANUARY 2ND-5TH, 1942

DEI:

After 4 days of deliberate attacks at Soerabaja the fortifications have been reduced to zero. The end could come at any time....subs begin the evacuation of cadres of key Dutch LCUs.

Japan captures Amboina, Boela, Bandoeng and Biak.

RAF bombers destroy around 30 resource points at Tarakan.

CHINA:

In a deliberate attack with 2 divisions, the Chinese are forced to retreat out of Anking back across the Yangtze....the 45,000 IJA troops in Nanchang are still cut off from supply however.

PHILIPPINES:

The Allies continue to fortify in Manila....no IJA troops have entered the city yet.

USAAF bombers based at Cayagan destroy 55 resources at Naga.

SOUTH PACIFIC:

The 3 USN CVs...CV Enterprise, CV Lexington and CV Saratoga had escorted the massive reinforcement convoys across the Pacific to New Caledonia. The USN CVs then sailed to a position approximately 500 miles NW of Koumac to refuel (off of a replenishment TF) and fly off a Marine Buffalo squadron to Rockhampton.

A large IJN invasion force is spotted only 200 miles from Port Moresby. Having completed refueling, the USN CVs are ordered to close Port Moresby at full speed and intercept the IJN transports. CL Marblehead...in port at Rockhampton...is ordered to close Port Moresby at full speed.

3 A-24 squadrons are flown into Port Moresby from Australia and placed on naval attack.

A-29s at Charter Towers are ordered on naval attack at extreme range.

Things should heat up a bit in the South Pacific over the next few days.

Interesting AAR Admiral.  I am also playing a game as the allies vs Steve in CHS.  I see a few similarities, although not many.

In my current game, a massive invasion force landed in the Phillipines on 12/7. The only bastions of defense left are Manilla and Bataan. KB struck Manilla and port attacks hit Singapore.  Pearl was left untouched.  In fact, the only invasions in that area have been Wake and Tarawa and just now Lunga.

In addition to the Phillipines, the only other main areas of focus for the Japanese have been the DEI.  Steve is using the same strategy he used against you. Capturing large airfields of Koepang, Amboina and Kendari and then moving to the north west for the rest.

Game time in our game is currently 1/6/42.

The only big surprise besides how hard the Phillipines was hit, is that KB has been showing itself around Columbo.  Numerous task forces sailing out of the area as well as Aden have been hit.

Have you seen KB lately?

Good luck and good hunting!

I have yet to see how U.S. carriers operate in CHS. Game date in our PBEM is 10/30/42.

As long as the KB lurks at full strength and with its early advantage, I see the virtue of picking and choosing your battles well. I've had several actions to date where my CV's had shadowed Pillager on the chance a good opportunity to strike might arise. However, either the tactical situations presented me in these actions were unfavorable (i.e. moving within range of Japanese LBA or engaging the KB at a disadvantage in numbers and/or position), or Pillager's objective in the action was not worth the risk of opposing it given what he was going to accomplish.

Other than two British CV's lost in an action off NW Australia (vs the Baby KB), no U.S. or Jap fleet carriers have been lost or seriously damaged in our game as of 10/42. As of now it's a stand-off, each side intact at full strength going into '43.
