UV: Extremely slow response times

Post by MikeE »

Greetings, been lurking here for a while waiting for the game to arrive so this is my first post. Paul actually pointed me over here after seeing me post about my problem on another board.

I am finding UV to be almost unplayable due to extremely long delays after certain mouse clicks. I am talking anywhere from 10 to 25-30 seconds in some cases. Also, during surface combat, the animations (smoke) and sound will sometimes freeze, only to resume 10-15 seconds later. I am running on a Dell Dimension 1.7 Ghz P4 with 256MB RAM and SB Live! and GeForce2 cards. The delays are primarily after clicking the arrow selection icons. At times it appears the game has locked up but this has never actually happened; it always comes back to life after these long delays.

I have installed the game on my daughter's older computer and so far (in limited time) have not experienced the same problem. It must be something on the Dell causing this. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Anybody else have any problem with this?

Does it matter what scenario you play or what you have the report delays set to?

It seems that it is always a good idea to look what happens if the sound is disabled. Most tech problems I have with UV are related to sound directly or indirectly.

I have the exact same problem... very long response times. I haven't tried everything to fix the problem yet, I had to downgrade my graphics card drivers in order to play Combat Mission... this may be the problem. I am running Windows 2000 Server and I think that it is the real cause of the problem (together with graphics/sound card issues).

I switched the sound off and on... no effect.

I'll try gettin newest drivers next.

I'm sure the other poster has Win 2000 where the game runs slow and the other comp where he installed and had no problems runs another op sys.

Frankly, it sounds to me as if you have some tasks running in the background periodically. Can you try ending any antivirus software or other resident applets and starting the game again? Ideally, the only processes you should see in the task list (pull it up with ctrl-alt-del) before running UV would be systray and explorer.

If that fails, try updating your graphics and sound drivers and making sure your DirectX version is 8.1. Check to make sure your chipset drivers are updated to the latest version for your motherboard.

If none of those help, make sure you have plenty of HD space and have scandisked/defragged recently.

ok problem fixed, it was a GeForce 2 driver problem. I updated to the newest version and it runs smooth.

GeForce 2 users with older drivers and similiar problems... just upadate your driver.

unhappiness

hm... I think I was too quick to say I've got it fixed... it seems to be running better but only for the first few minutes.... after that it again seems to "hang up" for several seconds before going to another screen... seems quite random too.

I'm defragmenting drives etc.

I'm having the same problem, although not as severe as mentioned above. The whole game seems to run somewhat sluggish, with jerky map movement and short delays when clicking on the selection arrows. I've run UV on a PIII 700, 128mb RAM, GF2 with latest drivers, but I got a brand spanking new P4 2.0Ghz, 256mb RAM GF3 today. I haven't had time to install UV on my new machine, but I will do so tomorrow and see if it helps.

jerky map

Post by battlehammer »

im running a 2.ghz p4 512 sdram geforce-2 mx400 (hp pavilion 9995) doesnt move around the map smoothly jerky screen. this goes away when i click to set destination of a task force very smooth then. I tryed to correct it by changing the mouse scroll to its most sensitive setting (im not in front of the game right now so i cant tell you exactly what the setting is called) this did help some but it didnt make it go away. This might have something to do with the cpu usage in another post still havent checked that yet.
I'm not having the other problems with animations but I dont run any anti-virus software niether.

I solved the problem with the delays by turning the hardware acceleration for the audio playback completely off. (In XP this is under "control panel>sounds and audio devices>audio>advanced>performance" - not the easiest thing to find). Thanks for the help, as Hartmann suggested, turning off the sound seems to be a pretty good first step in trying to diagnose any problems.

Seems to me most problems are with Nvidia cards, along with virus and firewall backgrounds. FYI - I installed also on an older computer - no internet usage, thus no virus or firewall program and an older graphics card- no install or game problems other than some slowness - (obviously expected with an old P11).

My only observation so far (as a long time Grigsby game player) is I'm surprised about the long learning curve. i thought I'd step right in based on long time PacWar play - but I'm haveing learning problems 9of course I'm getting older!)
