VISTA has a protective mode for parental control. The game is considered violent by VISTA. Setup a user call him "Just Me" and then turn off your parental controls as the Administrator. Mine did same thing until I gave parental permission to play the game to myself.

RE: vista cross of iron
sergeant,
thanks for the suggestion, i tried it and i am afraid it did not cure the problem, still stops working and tells me Vista is looking for the reason the program stopped.
Odd as Steel Panthers works great.
best wishes

RE: vista cross of iron
Further to my last posts, i have now managed to get COI working in Vista.
set desktop to 1024 x 768
set compatibility mode to Windows98/Windows Me
set compatibility mode to Run as Administrator
load game
in game options set resolution to 1290 x 1024 ( max)
after leaving game you can reset your desktop to original setting ( 1680 x 1050 )
i will continue to experiment to try and find a better way to load this game in what is after all the current and future operating system.
EDIT
For some reason COI stopped loading using the above settings, and i found the reason was the Vista DEP settings, by instructing Vista to exclude COI in its DEP control it would again work correctly, but this affected other programs,
so the answer was to run in Windows xp/sp2 compatability mode. This i assume runs COI in a different address in memory, DEP would then allow it to run, (Vista is it worth the bother).
do any of you tech guys from Matrix have anything to add?

RE: vista cross of iron
I bought an OEM copy of Vista Premium/32-bit, and with it, a license to bitch about M$. I installed it to a blank, 70GB partition on my hard-drive, and now have a dual-boot arrangement into either Vista or WinXP.
I've been pretty successful at getting legacy software to run, but it's almost always a hassle. And I'm not talking about more exotic stuff like ten-year old wargames, either, but up-to-date apps like Adobe Reader. WHENEVER I go to install or run software, I end up on Google, searching for a "work-around" to the inevitable issue that will arise during the process. It's worth noting, though, that some stuff simply won't run at all, peripherals, printers, cameras and the like.
Having experimented with the OS for about a month, I've pretty much written it off for now. It's certainly not like going from Win9x to WinXP, in an evolutionary sense. LOL, its more like going from DOS to Win9x: The interface is slick but, in 1995, there were no games for it. DirectX hadn't even been invented yet! I boot into it about once a week, and play one of the two new games that are included, Mahjong Titans. The game has a bug in it such that tiles sometimes become unresponsive to mouse inputs. My, oh my!

Philrob,
You say the max resolution is 1280x1024 - I thought it could run at any resolution? I don't have the game, but was going to buy it. However, I run at 1600x1200 (desktop) and 1440x900 (notebook). Also, does it support widescreen resolutions?
Thanks,
bink

Don't worry. You can set to whatever the max of your monitor is.

I tried these. None of these things work on my Vista system. I still get a black screen with a cursor. Holding down CTRL doesn't work, adding codecs doesn't help.
I have to admit that I am rather shocked that Matrix has not seen to it that this game is Vista-compatible.

RE: vista cross of iron
Okay, I got COI to run under Vista.
1. I moved all of the AVI files in the video directory to the TEMP directory.
2. I copied an AVI file that I knew ran on my computer to the VIDEO directory and made multiple copies of it there.
3. I renamed all the copies of that AVI to the original names of the AVI files in the VIDEO folder.
4.I hit PLAY, the AVI that I knew would run did run, and there was the game - at which point I could shut videos off for good.
Bizarre and somewhat silly, but it worked. Hey, Matrix! The game needs a way to disable the videos from the Command Center!

RE: vista cross of iron
I really wanted to buy this, but the Vista issues have put me off...unless you have made it compatible since November 07?

RE: vista cross of iron
Most people have no problem playing Cross of Iron under Vista.
Two issues stand out are can be addressed.
1. Video
tm.asp?m=1471932
2. Compatibility mode.
Navigate to C:\Program file\Close Combat\Close Combat III
Right click on CC3.exe and choose compatibility mode
Select win98 compatibility
Also select administrator
This should get you up and running next time you launch cross of Iron

RE: vista cross of iron
Thanks. Can you confirm that the Video disable and C:\Program file\Close Combat\Close Combat III will be found after I load C of I ?
May seem obvious but I am rather new to computers.
