What's This?

Post by miller7219 »

Hi. I've noticed that when missiles resolve against other missiles there is info in the message window. Will say sometjing life "PH=80 FPH = 80 DPH =75" or something along this line. What exactly is this and what are the abrevialtions (FPH, DPH, etc).

Well, "PH" means "Probability of Hit", I believe.

DPH is the ph of the SAM/AAM as read from the database aka Database PH

PH is the ph of the SAM/AAM after considering the situation (fast target, stupid target, small target, etc.)

FPH is the actual ph number used in determining hits and is the PH modified to take into account if multiple SAMs/AAMs were fired at the same target.  aka Final PH

Basically you are seeing the modifiers resolving if your missiles hit or not.

If I am not mistaken, in the case above it appears that you have a missile tracking a rather large slow target without decent ECM, since your PH is higher than the DPH. If that were something stealthy, like an F-117 for instance, you'd see the PH being much, much lower than the DPH.

They are usefull numbers to see, but every situation is different.

If it had been my design, I'd probably have buried it in a layer of the program below the GUI. Doesn't seem much reason for it to be displayed; but hey-ho, it's not my design.

Hehe, I would have buried it too, it is one of those debug messages (yes, we cheat and use the message log for them) that didn't get turned off.  Since the testers don't like them going away in release versions [8|], I cannot count on anyone mentioning that the messages are errantly showing...  Anyway, with enough "yes pleases" on that other thread asking for a detailed log of what is going on under the hood, maybe we'll be allowed to implement that.

These are the numbers displayed for a SM-2 ER II vs. a Harpoon IC (PH=80, FPH=80, DPH=75). I would think maybe the SM-2 would have a lower FPH than the DPH considering the Harpoon is a small target and a sea-skimmer. At at any rate, it seems EVERY AAM engagement I've seen shows the PH/FPH as 5% HIGHER than the DPH....regardless of the situation. Any care to test that out and see?

A list of modifiers for fast targets, small targets, crossing targets, etc...that the engine uses to modify would be helpful to all. Can the programmers put eyes on the code and give a modifiers list for all the types of weapon reolutions (Missiles, Torpedoes, AAM, etc?

The programmer could but it is an exercise easily enough accomplished by the players so I'll leave the exercise to said players. It will grow your understanding of the platform editor (and if you have the H3 paper rules they'll help).
