Oh yeah - turn to the fuzzy fiends (the fuzzy refers to their texture as WELL as their thinking!)

It's not flu like you had. It is "just a head cold". I can't breathe all that well.
I have the turn....

Yeah, New Caledonia is really out there on it's own.ORIGINAL: Mike Solli
That place is a pain in the butt..... Middle of nowhere.....
Interesting, had the US not invaded GC, that's probably where the war would have been fought...might have been better off for the Allies too. As I understand it New Caledonia is pretty arid, much different terrain than GC.

Perhaps they do have a monsoon season, not unlike the Mojave desert (when I lived there it rained every September, everyday for like 3 weeks straight, then not a drop the rest of the year).ORIGINAL: rtrapasso

According to World War II Pacific Island Guide, A Geo-Military Study by Gordon Rottman.
Surprising, for a South Pacific island, much of New Caledonia is sparsely vegetated, often being compared to Australia. The southwest coast is dry with the northeast side being more tropical. Many interior areas are devoid of vegetation while others are covered with low grasses and the eucalyptus-like Niaouli. However, many valleys and seaward-facing mountainsides are covered with kauri pines and there are substantial areas suitable for grazing livestock. Coconut palms dominate much of the coastal planes.
The book doesn't say it explicitly, but the areas devoid of vegetation are probably more rocky than they are desert like. There are steep, rocky mountain chains that dominate the interior of the island.
Interestingly, the New Hebrides, not THAT far away, have rich, dense tropical forests. The border between temperate and tropical climes seems to be the northern end of New Caledonia.

The Turks and Caicos are mostly arid, at the SE end of the British West Indies. I don't think anyone would say Hispaniola or Puerto Rico, just to the south, or the Bahamas, just to the north are arid. Just the right position for the trade winds, etc, and topology to keep things drier than you might expect.

Yeah, weather patterns are interesting. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would never have guessed that the Mojave had a mini-monsoon season. But all those dry rivers beds were there for a reason.

i suppose it could be like the Big Island, Hawaii - the entire Hilo side is rain-drenched, but most of the island is a desert...
